THE CONTEST
|
This month, we are asking you to solve this riddle:
My chest is hairy,
like my namesake's.
Although he lives
on the Pacific,
I live in the Atlantic.
He watches the water,
I live in it.
Who am I?
If you think that you have the answer to the riddle, please go to our website , click on Contact Us, and give us your submission. Good luck!
Congratulations to our winners last month, A. Batacan, M. Marnell, and K. Van Dam! We asked our Scuttlebutt readers to answer a series of questions about how you learned about us, and your other thoughts about WCYC. It was a tough call to pick the winning entry. So many of you had wonderful, touching memories of WCYC through the years. We tried our darndest to find a clear first place, winner, but failed. So we winnowed it down to a three-way tie. Thank you all for taking the time to send in your responses. Due to the fact the we have three winners, we don't have space here to include all three of their answers. We will sneak the other two in in future Scuttlebutts. Starting alphabetically, by last name, here is A. Batacan's entry:
Where do you live?
Martinez
How long a WCYC fan?
Since 1978 after we moved here from So Ca. This has been our favorite restaurant ever since. It's our "go to " place for special occasions too.
What do you like about WCYC?
The great quality of food, service and atmosphere. We can't think of a comparable or better seafood restaurant in the East Bay.
What is your favorite beverage when you come in?
Does an oyster shooter count? I love Bloody Mary's as well as fresh oysters. The oyster shooter is a great two-fer. I get to enjoy both in one shot (pun intended).
What is your favorite go to menu item?
Clam Chowder. We don't care if it's 100 degrees outside. We're eating WCYC clam chowder and taking some home with us.
Got a great WCYC story?
One December evening, my friend and I were just served our dinner when he got a call from his daughter. She got hurt at the nearby ice skating rink. He left me to take care of her and so his food got cold. He came back to rejoin me and they brought out a newly prepared entree for him (not a heated version of the original order) at no extra charge. I think that was a classy move by WCYC. I think our server a good sized tip from us.
How did you first find out about us?
My boss to be took me there for lunch in 1997. He could not stop talking about WCYC.
All three winners will receive 50 WCYC bucks on their Loyalty Cards. Thank you all for your wonderful WCYC memories and stories.

Crabs, Roasted and Singapore |
DUNGENESS CRAB UPDATE
We all look forward to our local Dungeness delicacy at this time of year, and to not have it available can really wreak havoc with our traditions. We're hoping that the dearth of Dungeness won't last for too much longer.
In order to get you up to speed on the situation, Chef Kevin writes:
Here is the story as we know it at this time: The season has not opened, and the Fish and Game Department is keeping it closed for the immediate future. As soon as crab is approved as safe to catch and eat, we will have them in the market and on the menu. The latest report from Fishmonger Mike, of Osprey Seafood, is that it looks pretty positive for a possible opening on the 15th, but we won't start counting our crabs before they're caught.
If the season ends up staying closed past Christmas Eve, we will start bringing them in from Oregon, Washington or Alaska. Please note that this will be for the market only. We will not be adding fresh crab or Cioppino to the menu until the local season is open. This has happened before, when bad weather has kept the catch closed during the holidays. If that happens please prepare yourself for a shortage and a rise in the market price. If you would like a holiday order for pick up on Christmas Eve, we suggest you place your order as soon as possible, as it's going to be first come first served. For regular orders in the market before then, please give us 48 hours notice so that we can track fresh crab down for you.
Once the local season opens, just give us at least 24 hours so we can make sure we have enough to go around. We will be receiving them and cooking them here, every day.
(Chef Kev's famous roasted crab with garlic, wine, herbs and butter, or Singapore-style spicy red chile crab over jasmine rice are off the menu dishes that insiders know to request.)
We WILL be having our annual crab parties this year, even if the local season isn't open. If we have to, we will bring in crab from out of state. We will possibly need to increase the price, if that is the case. See below for information.
