Mosquitos with West Nile Virus Detected in Seal Beach
The Orange County Mosquito and Vector Control District (OCMVCD) has confirmed mosquito samples infected with West Nile virus (WNv) in the City of Seal Beach.
Residents, park guests, sports leagues, and outdoor event attendees are advised to take precautions and wear mosquito repellent when these mosquitoes are most active (dawn or dusk).
TAKE CHARGE OF YOUR HOME AND YARD
- Aedes mosquitoes thrive indoors and can lay eggs in and around containers, vases and even bamboo plants.
- Keep plant saucers dry.
- Keep your pet's water dishes clean.
- Don't over water your plants.
- Use EPA certified mosquito repellent and apply before going outside.
- Wear long-sleeved clothing to prevent bites.
- Connect with your neighbors and spread the word about mosquito prevention.
- Don't give mosquitoes a biting chance. Be diligent and make source reduction a weekly routine.

Seal Beach Tennis and Pickleball Center
The Seal Beach Pickleball Association has started accepting donations for a memorial brick program to be installed at the Seal Beach Tennis and Pickleball Center. Bricks can be purchased and installed at the facility as a lasting tribute. The brick area will enhance the facility and allow users to continue creating long-term memories. Bricks can be purchased using the QR code provided below.

Department Highlights
There are currently 2,100 users registered for the Senior Transportation Program. The program is available for Seal Beach residents aged 60 years and older and consists of a pre-fixed shuttle route and Yellow Cab taxi service. To register for the program, please visit www.sealbeachca.gov or contact the Recreation and Community Services Department at (562) 431-2527 X 1307.
There are currently 472 pickleball members and 66 tennis members at the Seal Beach Tennis and Pickleball Center. To sign up for a membership, please contact staff at the center, or call (562) 598-8624 for more information.

Senior Lunch Café
The Seal Beach Lunch Program is provided by Meals on Wheels Orange County (OC), which is held at the North Seal Beach Community Center. The Dine-In Lunch Café takes place Monday - Friday from 11:00am- 12:00pm. The Dine-In Lunch Program is open to adults ages 60 and older, with a suggested donation for lunch is $3.00 per meal. Updated Water & Sewer Rates Effective September 1, 2025
Beginning September 1, 2025, updated water and sewer rates will go into effect as part of the City’s ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving essential infrastructure. These rate adjustments are necessary to support system upgrades, cover rising operational costs, and ensure the continued delivery of safe, reliable water and wastewater services. By making these investments now, we can avoid more costly emergency repairs in the future and continue providing the high levels of service that our residents expect and deserve.

After a period of troubleshooting and thorough diagnosis, staff determined that the McGaugh Elementary pool heater could no longer operate efficiently. Since the heater was unable to warm the pool to its proper temperature, a full replacement became necessary.

Department Updates
- On October 9, the California Surf Lifesaving Association (CSLSA) Board of Directors meeting took place in Laguna Beach. Seal Beach Lifeguards received awards from both the CSLSA and the United States Lifesaving Association (USLA). Lifeguards Dean Frizzell, Ellie Sherlock, Beau Wade, Brett Peoples, and Chris Dominguez were recognized for their outstanding courage and skill and presented with Heroic Act Awards. The rescues were carried out in December 2024 under extremely large surf conditions, showcasing their quick thinking, skill, and exceptional bravery.
- Lifeguard towers will be removed from the beach Wednesday October 22, in preparation for the winter season and upcoming sand berm construction.'
- This week, the Marine Safety Department concluded an ongoing beach driving training in collaboration with SBPD Community Service Officer’s (CSO's). The cross-training provided CSOs with insight into safe beach driving techniques and best practices when driving alongside our Marine Safety Officers.
- On October 15, Seal Beach Lifeguards were dispatched along the San Gabriel River trail for an OCFA swift water rescue call. The call, originating from Cypress, reported a person in the water. Seal Beach Lifeguards performed a search from the river mouth to 7th Street and staged the Rescue Watercraft for deployment. Fortunately, no individuals were found, and the search was suspended after two hours.

Department Updates
- Seal Beach Police Department secured for FY 25/26 OTS “Office of Traffic and Safety” grant for $102,000.00. These funds will be used to help keep the Seal Beach Roadways a safer place for residents and guest to travel on. These funds will assist with DUI checkpoints, directed traffic enforcement, and bicycle and pedestrian safety enforcement.
- The Orange County Police Canine Association (OCPCA) is a nonprofit organization established in 1983 by law enforcement K-9 handlers in Orange County. Its mission is to support police canine teams by raising funds and awareness for medical care, replacement of retired K-9s, and advanced training opportunities. The OCPCA also hosts an annual public demonstration showcasing the impressive skills of K-9 teams, including obedience, agility, apprehension, and detection work. Proceeds from these events support the continued growth and sustainability of police K-9 programs throughout the region.
- Officer Victor Ruiz and his K-9 partner, Saurus, proudly represent the Seal Beach Police Department as part of its K-9 unit. Saurus, a highly trained Dutch German Shepherd skilled in suspect apprehension and firearms detection, exemplifies the dedication and professionalism that organizations like the OCPCA strive to promote. Through their teamwork, Officer Ruiz and K-9 Saurus highlight the important role police dogs play in public safety and community engagement, reflecting the values and mission of the OCPCA.
