Seal Beach Marine Safety Assists Huntington Beach Marine Safety Department in annual air show

The Huntington Beach Marine Safety Department recently requested our assistance during their annual air show. This event provided an excellent opportunity for our staff to collaborate with numerous agencies in a large-scale mutual aid operation. Our boat and operators were deployed for all three days of the show, serving as the Division Hotel Supervisor on the west end of the air box. In this role, we coordinated eight vessels to ensure the air box remained clear and safe throughout the event.

Updated Water & Sewer Rates Effective September 1, 2025

Beginning September 1, 2025, updated water and sewer rates will go into effect as part of the City’s ongoing commitment to maintaining and improving essential infrastructure. These rate adjustments are necessary to support system upgrades, cover rising operational costs, and ensure continued delivery of safe, reliable water and wastewater services. By making these investments now, we can avoid more costly emergency repairs in the future and continue providing the high levels of service our residents expect and deserve.

We encourage residents and businesses to review the new rate structure at 2025-2026 Rates.pdf

Routine Sewer Cleaning

Our Utilities Division is comprised of potable water and sanitary sewer professionals who work diligently to ensure that both systems run smoothly. Our sanitary sewer crew goes out every day and cleans the City’s sewer mains using a specialized commercial vehicle to clear blockages. The work is completed by providing a high-pressure water spray into the interior of the mainline pipe to scour the edges for a proper channel of flow. This preventative measure not only extends the usable life of a pipeline but also serves as a vital part of ensuring that no sewer backups occur within the city.

Library Maintenance Update

Our Maintenance team recently completed an important repair at the Mary Wilson Library.

Night call-out

On Saturday night, we received a call at midnight regarding a rescue situation. An intoxicated fisherman had jumped off the pier. MSO Matt Corb quickly responded and, without hesitation, jumped into the water to assist. The fisherman was clinging to a life ring thrown by a bystander, and thanks to Matt’s swift action, the individual was safely brought to shore. Great job, Matt!

Grant Awarded for Beach Access Equipment

We are pleased to share that our grant request to the Orange County Coastkeepers has been approved! We applied for $30,000 in funding to install a new beach access mat near 1st Street, aimed at improving accessibility for all beachgoers. We will now begin working through the project details with the goal of having the new mats installed by early 2026.

Congratulations Nick Nicholas!

Captain Nick Nicholas of the Seal Beach Police Department, California has been honored as one of the 2025 International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP) 40 Under 40 Awardees. This recognition is a testament to his exceptional leadership, innovation, and dedication to modern, inclusive policing. International Association of Chiefs of Police (IACP).

Department Updates

  • Yosa, Lt. Clasby, Capt. Nicholas, and COP Team Officers Fisher and Rael-Brook visited the Seal Beach Playgroup preschool to share Halloween safety tips (costume visibility, crossing at corners, checking treats) and general safety reminders; Yosa was the star guest and was gently petted by every child, reinforcing positive, trauma-informed engagement with young residents.

  • Hosted the monthly Volunteers in Policing (VIPS) meeting, providing department updates, upcoming event needs, training opportunities, and recognition of recent volunteer contributions, while fielding Q&A to keep the team aligned with current priorities.

  • Captain Nicholas delivered a “Surviving Gun Violence” presentation to P.E.O. International, covering situational awareness, immediate action steps, bleeding control basics, and post-incident recovery/resilience, tailored for community members and civic leaders.

  • Launched the four-week VIP Academy to prepare future volunteers for field service—including radio etiquette, records basics, traffic control, and community outreach—with 20 prospective VIPS actively participating in classroom and hands-on modules.

  • Attended the monthly PTA meeting to strengthen school-police partnerships, share safety updates and upcoming initiatives, and gather parent feedback to inform targeted education and presence around campuses and events.

  • The Seal Beach Police Department is proud to announce it has been awarded the Office of Traffic Safety (OTS) Grant for the 2025–2026 fiscal year. This grant is specifically designed to enhance roadway safety for drivers, bicyclists, and pedestrians throughout our community. The awarded funds will support a variety of traffic safety initiatives, including:
  • DUI checkpoints and enforcement operations
  • Directed traffic enforcement in high-risk areas
  • Cell phone violation enforcement during April 2026
  • Targeted efforts to address illegal street racing in Orange County
  • Collaborative DUI enforcement operations with neighboring law enforcement agencies
  • Bicycle safety enforcement and education

  • These grant funds are essential in allowing the Seal Beach Police Department to dedicate officers and resources to proactive traffic safety efforts. Through this support, we remain committed to making our streets safer for everyone who lives, works, and travels in Seal Beach.

  • On this year's Walk to School Day, the Seal Beach Police Department participated alongside students, staff, and families of McGaugh Elementary School. Officers joined the walk to help ensure a safe route, foster positive relationships with the community, and support the event’s message of health and safety. National Walk to School Day is an annual event that promotes safe, healthy, and environmentally-friendly habits by encouraging students, families, and community members to walk to school. The day highlights the importance of physical activity, pedestrian safety, and community engagement.
