Honoring our Veterans this November

November is a time to reflect on and recognize the sacrifices of the brave men and women who have served our country. At VOA, we are especially proud to honor veterans—not only through words but through action. We believe that no veteran should face homelessness or lack basic needs after serving our nation.

Our Veterans Program provides crucial housing and essential services, helping them transition from instability to independence. Fun fact: our veterans are housed in an average of 22 days and are finding stable housing and supportive services faster than ever before.

With tailored resources and personalized support, we work to ensure that veterans in need are given a fresh start, recognizing the commitment they have shown to our country. As we honor Veterans Day this month, we invite our community to join us in celebrating their strength, resilience, and contributions.

Let’s work together to support our veterans and ensure they receive the respect and assistance they deserve. Thank you to all who serve our country, from all of us at VOA!

Speaking of essential services, did you know. . .

VOA Spokane is one of only 53 Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinics (CCBHC) in Washington State? This designation enables us to provide mental health and substance use services as a core part of our approach, supporting individuals at every step of their journey. Our CCBHC model is designed to offer person-centered care across our programs, which include shelter and supportive housing for teens, women, young adults, and veterans.

Our mission is to transform lives across Spokane by making care more accessible, compassionate, and individualized. This November, as we reflect on the value of service, we are deeply grateful for your support, which allows us to create hope, healing, and opportunity for those we serve.

Thank you for being part of this journey with us!

Celebrating Connection During Native American Heritage Month

This Native American Heritage Month, we’re proud to highlight Leona, Program Manager at Hope House and a Chippewa-Cree from Rocky Boy, Montana. Leona brings warmth, understanding, and cultural support to our Native clients, offering them a space to connect and share.

“If a Native person is staying here, I will offer to smudge them,” Leona explains. "It's a spiritual modality that some of the folks like to engage in." This spiritual practice that many appreciate, brings comfort and a sense of home. There are usually 5-10 Native women staying at Hope House daily.

Leona takes time to listen to each person’s story, talking about life on the reservation, the foods they miss, and the traditions that connect them to their heritage. Through these conversations, she not only shares in their culture but also learns about the diversity of Native traditions, building stronger connections and honoring the richness of each tribe.

Thank you, Leona, for helping us build a community that honors the histories, cultures, and strengths of Indigenous peoples all year long!

Giving Tuesday is Coming!

Giving Tuesday sneaking up on us! Have you thought about what cause you’d like to support this year?

On this global day of giving, your generosity can make a real difference in the lives of those we serve—from youth at Crosswalk to young moms at Alexandria’s House and individuals rebuilding their futures in our housing programs. By providing a meal, donating a warm coat, or giving a gift of cash, let’s make this Giving Tuesday one to remember!

A special shout out to our HUB International volunteers who fully organized the clothing closet at Crosswalk, sorted bins of bras for Hope House, and held a hygiene drive for necessities we were in dire need of! What amazing people, and what an amazing organization- not to mention they're one of our sponsors!
