The Church of the Ascension

Dear People of Ascension,

The image that accompanies this message, the mosaic of a hen gathering her chicks under her wings, comes from the Dominus Flevit Church, located on the Mt. of Olives overlooking the Old City of Jerusalem. The name means “the Lord wept”, and the church commemorates two different and easily conflated stories from the gospel of Luke in which Jesus expresses powerful frustration, grief and longing at the refusal of the city- and of course the people in it- to accept his prophetic call to love and justice.

The first is this Sunday’s gospel which comes as Jesus makes his way towards the destiny which awaits him, doing the work he is called to do. He grieves for those he cannot seem to reach. “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, city that kills the prophets… how often I have desired to gather you together as a hen gathers her brood under her wings, but you were not willing.” The second occurs as part of the triumphal entry into the city on Palm Sunday. Tradition says that seeing the city- perhaps from this spot or one like it- Jesus bursts into tears, saying, “if only you had known the things that make for peace.” The lovely little church is actually shaped like a teardrop.

As I think of the overwhelming, disastrous state of our country, I am moved by these images of Jesus’ deep feeling. Does God weep for us? I think so: over us and with us too. Surely those tears- of grief over what we do to each other, ourselves and the earth; of frustration at our resistance to change and of longing to gather, soothe and heal us- can open our hearts and invite us into the heart of our compassionate God. Perhaps if we feel our own grief and share that grief with one another we will find deep comfort and new strength for the work we are called to do.

Sometimes Lent is a time for lament- for ourselves, for our communities, for our world. When it is so for us, may we also hear the tender desire of Jesus to welcome and restore us. May we take shelter under God’s mothering wings.

Liz

A Prayer for Spiritual Communion

If you are attending any of our services online, we invite you to use this prayer at communion.

In union, O Lord, with your faithful people at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is now being celebrated, I desire to offer to you praise and thanksgiving. I remember your death, Lord Christ; I proclaim your resurrection; I await your coming in glory. Since I cannot receive you today in the Sacrament of your Body and Blood, I beseech you to come spiritually into my heart. Cleanse and strengthen me with your grace, Lord Jesus, and let me never be separated from you. May I live in you, and you in me, in this life and in the life to come. Amen.
