January 2024

Hello Claire,

As we usher in the new year, we can’t help but reflect on the past 12 months which were full of growth, new partnerships, advocacy, delicious new recipes, and community.

The Olivewood team spent the first week of the new year doing staff reflection and training. This year we started off with a mindfulness meditation and ended with a staff cooking challenge, which turned more into a cooking competition than a challenge! In between we talked about strategic planning, program evaluation, roles and responsibilities, resource development and our justice, equity, diversity and inclusion work (JEDI). We enjoyed an educational tour of Kimball Park and dove deeper into our personal nonprofit origin stories with consultant Loretta Turner.

Our capital campaign remains a major focus as this plan not only means improved facilities but also better access to both healthy food and community spaces for our programs and partners. We are excited to break ground on the greenhouse and production building later this month.

And, as always, our property is available to rent for gatherings, celebrations, teambuilding cooking challenges or community service and more!

On the horizon is our popular gnocchi class for adults, new recipes for our January Chefcitos, an upcoming open garden and more! We hope you’ll find time to visit the garden soon.

In Gratitude,

Jen Nation

Executive Director

Fish-to-Families Program in

National City

Fridays are when our weekly "Fish to Families" program takes place. Each Friday, Olivewood is one of the organizations that the Fish to Families program - which was created in 2020 by the San Diego Fishermen's Working Group - utilizes to connect local fishermen and chefs to people experiencing food insecurity. National City residents can enjoy fresh catches paired with vegetables, pastas, and many delicious combinations! Thanks to Chefs Marcus Twilegar and Amanda who create delicious meals for our community every week!

SDG&E

SDG&E has natural gas energy-saving tips to help you save on your bill during the cold weather.

1. Block the chill: Caulk and weather-strip around drafty doors and windows. Use a door sweep,

door sock or towel at the bottom of doors with a gap.

2. Keep your furnace and air filters clean: Check furnace filters once a month and replace them

regularly. A dirty air filter can increase your energy costs and cause problems with your

equipment.

3. Set your ceiling fan to run clockwise: This causes the fan to produce an updraft, forcing the hot air that rises to your ceiling down and into the rest of the room. In the summer, you can switch

the fans to counterclockwise to keep the room cool.

4. Schedule a no-cost SDG&E gas appliance check: Book your appointment at

sdge.com/MyAccount or on SDG&E’s mobile app available in the App Store or Google Play.
