Educating and Inspiring the Next Generation of Leading Women
Friend,

March is both Women's History Month and National Nutrition Month. It only makes sense that the documentary film, The Kitchenistas is slated to debut on KPBS on March 4. Exploring the connection between cultural traditions, community, and health, this film beautifully shows the impact an empowered group of women can have on family and community.

Since 2012, Olivewood has graduated 275 Kitchenistas® from our Cooking for Salud® program, and there are nearly the same number of people on the program's waiting list. Your generosity has helped transform the lives of those struggling with obesity, diabetes and other health conditions related to food. Please consider supporting even more women to be health champions.
March also marks one year of the pandemic, shutting down schools and businesses and putting thousands of people out of work and without access to food. Thanks to YOU, Olivewood was able to pivot immediately and use the healthy, local, organic produce grown on site to support people who needed it the most. We are immensely grateful for our supporters, volunteers, and community partners who have supported this endeavor.

Our children's garden and nutrition program has been a massive success! Over 1000 students across the National City community have been able to learn about food stewardship and sustainable gardening practices through our educational programs since January 2021. Check out these messages from Ms. Holtzman's third grade class.
Olivewood In The HuffPost
In an article, by the HuffPost, How To Get Your Kids to Make Their Own Damn Snacks, Olivewood's very own Rebecca Hershberger-Howat shared her expert insight on how to get children to try new foods.

"Kids are more complex than we give them credit for," she said. "When you present cooking as an exploration where kids can make suggestions and learn, the kitchen becomes a safe space and kids will try new foods, even it's just one big bite."

Rebecca teaches Olivewood's Chefcitos Cooking Class, empowering youth to learn how to cook healthy and culturally relevant meals. Learn more about the program below.

  • ¼ cup of chopped onion
  • 2 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil

  • 2 eggs (optional)

SDG&E Tips
If you have outstanding bills, and you are a CARE or FERA customer, you may be eligible for debt forgiveness through SDG&E’s Arrearage Management Payment (AMP) Plan. This plan offers qualified, current SDG&E customers financial assistance to help reduce past due account balances.

AMP is a 12-month payment plan that forgives 1/12 of a participant’s debt after each on-time payment of the current month’s bill. After 12 on-time payments of each current month’s bill, the participant’s debt will be fully forgiven up to a maximum of $8,000. Enrolled participants are protected from disconnection while participating. Find out if you qualify at sdge.com/AMP or call an SDG&E AMP Service Specialist at 1-888-204-3576.
