September 2023 Issue #3

From District Governor Russ Jones:

I can’t believe it is already September, one of my favorite months of the year. While summer may be over, we typically have comfortable weather for outside activities. This is a great time to visit our parks and trails for walks and picnics. Football is back as fans all look forward to a great season of tailgating and their favorite team’s success on the field.

I have visited half of the clubs in District 6400 and am having a blast. Barb and I are so fortunate for the opportunity to see so many Rotarians and learn of all the great projects, fund raisers and social activities. I truly appreciate the hospitality shown to us at every club visit. Clubs in D6400 are truly creating hope in the world. If I have not been to your club yet, I am looking forward to seeing you soon. My club visit schedule for September is included in this newsletter and on the web site.

September is Basic Education and Literacy month on the Rotary calendar. How appropriate with back to school happening throughout our communities. Many clubs partner with their local elementary schools to encourage reading by donating books to their libraries or deliver backpacks with basic school supplies to ensure children get started on the right foot.

Internationally, our clubs and district has been supporting the Guatemala Literacy project as well as other literacy global grants. Let’s remember the Interact clubs are getting their year started with planning their fundraisers and service projects. Rotarians should support these future Rotarians.

Many club projects are kicking off this month. Read through this newsletter and look at the district website for information about what is going on all around our district. often drop in unannounced. I go to as many events as my schedule allows and often drop in unannounced. I must mention my club’s upcoming event, the Plymouth Rotary Chicken Bar-Be-Que on September 10 (11am-5pm) in downtown Plymouth. In addition to the best chicken dinner you will ever have, there is an entire fall festival including rides for kids of all ages. Stop by and I will give you a free tour of the BBQ operation. Tickets are available at the event or online here.

Our district has several events this month as well. The District Governor’s golf outing is on September 18 at the Grosse Ile Country Club. If you don’t golf or can’t get away that day, join us for dinner only. You can click here to register or be sponsor. This golf outing is the sole source of funds for the D6400 Foundation World Community Service District Matching Grants. To apply for these grants, applications are due October 1 and April 1 each year. More info and the application is available on the district website.

I am encouraging members to consider attending “Beyond Their Stories”, Human Trafficking Conference at Henry Ford Community College. While not directly sponsored by District 6400, it has been organized by members from D6400 as well as District 6380 and District 6600 (Northern Ohio). For more information, click here.

Wonder what it is like to be a District Governor? The short answer is better than you can imagine. I have had so much fun and made so many new friends from across North America and locally. Information on qualifications and the application process is available on the district website. Applications are deadline is November 30. Will you Be the One?

Yours in Rotary Service,

DG Russ

District Rotary Foundation Committee Update

Sue Goldsen, Chair

Happy September to you!

I'd like to remind our club presidents and Rotary Foundation chairs that we would like all clubs to promote World Polio Day October 24th. Please email me with what your club is planning so we can highlight it on our district website. My email address is sue@goldsen.com.

September is Basic Education and Literacy Month for Rotary. This is one of Rotary's seven areas of focus.

What is your Rotary Club doing to support this important Rotary Foundation Area of Focus?

Basic education and literacy is one of The Rotary Foundation’s six areas of focus. We know that basic education and literacy are essential for reducing poverty, improving health, encouraging community and economic development, and promoting peace.

Worldwide, 67 million children have no access to education, and more than 775 million people over the age of 15 are illiterate. Our members support educational projects that provide technology, teacher training, vocational training teams, student meal programs, and low-cost textbooks to communities. Our goal is to strengthen the capacity of communities to support basic education and literacy, reduce gender disparity in education, and increase adult literacy.

So what is your club doing to promote literacy and basic education?  We know some clubs do little free libraries, read to school age students, some are involved with the

Guatemalan Literacy Projects, some are helping through RELAY and working in African youth, many of you also mentor students. Whatever you are doing thank you, your helping to shape the children of our world.

Welcome New Members!
