“Celebrating a Legacy, Inspiring the Future”
Recently, I had the privilege of participating in "Better with Age: Glowing Older", founded by Nancy Griffin and held at the beautiful Lake Austin Spa Resort in Austin, Texas. It was an extraordinary gathering of legendary women and industry icons who have helped shape and advance the spa and wellness industry.
Spending these days together was a powerful reminder of how far our industry has come, thanks to the vision, passion, and leadership of the women who paved the way. These remarkable women didn’t simply build careers; they opened doors, challenged conventions, and helped create an industry that continues to evolve and thrive.
But our legacy isn’t measured only by what we have accomplished. It’s also measured by what we give back.
As leaders, we have a responsibility to mentor, encourage, and uplift the next generation of men and women entering our industry. By sharing our knowledge, opening doors, and creating opportunities for emerging leaders, we help ensure that the spa and wellness industry continues to grow, innovate, and become even stronger.
This experience also reaffirmed my passion for supporting the Florida spa community. The connections, conversations, and shared commitment I experienced at Lake Austin reinforced the important role the Florida Spa & Wellness Association (FSA) plays in bringing our community together, strengthening our industry, and supporting its continued growth. It reminded me why we must continue creating opportunities for education, connection, advocacy, and collaboration throughout Florida.
I left this gathering feeling inspired, grateful, and more committed than ever to the power of connection, collaboration, and paying it forward. When we lift one another up, we elevate the entire industry.
I'll be sharing more about this meaningful experience in our FSA November newsletter.
Our greatest achievement isn’t just the legacy we leave behind, but the future we help others create!
In Wellness,
Ilana

At 20, we were just winging it.
At 40, we were leading it.
At 60, we’re leaving it.
So who’s next once we're gone?
The 2.1 trillion dollar US wellness industry is the world’s largest. It’s a huge business with over 191 million visits a year.*
But, this mindful monster is run by real people, for the benefit of other real people. Its power and purpose manifests 1 massage, 1 facial, 1 personal training session & 1 wellness experience at a time.
Being a Spa & Wellness Professional is a “thing” because wellness programming needs organization and a process to keep service providers scheduled, stocked-up and strong.
Running a wellness operation is a microcosm of the global community we are serving. We have to take care of our team who are caring for our larger community of guests, members and clients.
I don’t have a bullet-point list of how-to’s. Sorry, AI and the internet is full of those and some will work and some won't, depending on your unique circumstances. Which brings me to the point that you actually know what to do. But I need you to ask yourself, “am I leading with Spa Integrity?”
Spa integrity goes to the core of why we do this in the first place. It touches the primal reason we went to our first spa, and connects us to our relationship with ourselves. The degree of trust we experienced then is what we still strive to create for our staff and clients.
So I ask you, what are you doing ? Is it working for you? This is important to figure out because the next gen of spa leadership is on your team, watching your every move.
They came looking for a workplace to call home and a community that sees them for who they are, and will support them as they grow. They will be replacing us 60-something’s as we start the next chapter in our life stories.
To answer the question I started this article with, who’s next? Look around you. That’s who's next.

LOCATION, LOCATION, LOCATION
Florida massage establishments within large resorts or hotels should consider reviewing the physical address provided to the state to ensure it is specific to the facility's location on the property. If the establishment license lists the general address of the entire property, the Florida Board of Massage Therapy may view the whole resort as the licensed establishment. Consequently, the entire property could be required to follow the strict laws and operational standards governing massage establishments. This means regulations regarding sanitation, inspections, and corporate record-keeping could technically apply to areas completely unrelated to the spa and treatment areas, creating a massive compliance and administrative burden.
To avoid this sweeping regulatory oversight, be highly specific and narrow the scope of the licensed premises to those of relevance. Consider naming only the specific spa facility, building name, or suite where the actual massage and spa treatments will be performed. For example, instead of listing the resort's main address alone, format the information to specify the exact name of the spa and/or reference the building. Restricting the license address to the exact footprint of your operations protects the broader property from unnecessary legal scrutiny and ensures state inspections remain properly focused. It is important to note that ALL legal requirements be maintained and documents accessible within the confines of the establishment.

“Turning the Spa Experience Into Year-Round Revenue”
| | |
Today’s spa experience extends far beyond the treatment room. For spa operators, retail, memberships, packages, and personalized home-care recommendations offer valuable opportunities to strengthen guest relationships, encourage repeat visits, and create more consistent revenue throughout the year.
Retail is one of the most natural ways to extend the guest experience. When therapists recommend professional skincare or wellness products that complement a guest’s treatment, they provide an opportunity for guests to continue caring for themselves at home. The key is to make recommendations personal, educational, and relevant to each guest’s needs rather than focusing solely on making a sale. Product demonstrations, seasonal skincare recommendations, and thoughtfully curated retail displays can help guests discover products they genuinely value.
Membership programs and service packages can also encourage loyalty while creating more predictable revenue. Monthly wellness memberships, treatment bundles, and seasonal offerings give guests a reason to return regularly. For resort and hotel spas, packages that combine treatments with amenities, dining, or other wellness experiences can further enhance the guest journey while increasing overall spending.

"This Is Why You Feel Fine After A Short Night Of Sleep,
Even If Your Partner Doesn't"
| | |
Have you ever noticed that you and your partner got the exact same amount of sleep, but experienced the next day completely differently? One person feels sharp, calm, and ready for the day, while the other is foggy, irritable, and is already dreading the 2 p.m. slump.
Same number of hours, totally different mornings. If you've ever wondered how that's possible, a new year-long study offers a compelling explanation, and the magic 8 hours of shuteye we've all been taught to strive for might be missing the point.
The study that questions a one-size-fits-all number
Researchers tracked 462 adults for a full year using Oura Ring wearables, collecting nightly sleep data alongside daily reports on mood, motivation, stress, and alertness. They also measured longer-term cardiometabolic markers, including blood pressure and arterial stiffness

"Sustainability in the Modern Spa"

How Responsible Spa Operations Are Shaping the Future of Wellness
Today, wellness is about more than relaxation, rejuvenation, and self-care. It is also about making choices that support the health of our planet. As consumers become increasingly conscious of their environmental impact, spas and wellness businesses are rethinking how they operate, from the products they use to the resources they consume. Sustainability is no longer simply an added benefit; it is becoming an essential part of delivering a modern, responsible wellness experience.
Conscious Choices: Sustainable Product Sourcing
The journey toward sustainability often begins with the products used in treatments and daily operations. Spas are increasingly exploring responsibly sourced ingredients, ethically produced skincare, biodegradable packaging, and products from suppliers that demonstrate a commitment to environmental stewardship.
