Student Spotlight: Shane Williams
|
Shane Williams demonstrates a ballet jump against a backdrop at the Van Aken District.
|
Sit down for a chat with Shaker Heights Middle School eighth-grader Shane Williams and it's clear that he has a gift for conversation and a passion for dance. Over the past three years, Shane's interest in ballet has grown from taking one class to seriously considering a career as a professional dancer. You can catch him on stage next month in the Russian dance at the City Ballet of Cleveland's Uniquely Cleveland Nutcracker, December 14-15, at the Breen Center for Performing Arts.

Student Spotlight: Brothers Ethan and Liam Camp
Brothers Ethan and Liam Camp are both pianists and were both recently named winners in the American Protege International Piano Competition, a national competition designed for young musicians, actors and singers who are on the path to a successful professional performance career. As winners, the two will play in a concert at Carnegie Hall on December 22. We caught up with Ethan, a Woodbury fifth grader, and Liam, a first-grade student at Boulevard, to ask them about their lives as musicians.

Employee Spotlight: Lauren Priestley, Curriculum and Instruction Technology Specialist
If the world of public education was a Hollywood production, then Lauren Priestley---the District's Curriculum and Instruction Technology Specialist---would be akin to a producer, an integral behind-the-scenes role, whose knowledge of the business and of the players is key to the project's success. Ms. Priestley is closely involved in the professional learning of District teachers, she has a leadership role in the District's i3 Initiative (which focuses on fostering Inquiry, Imagination and Innovation in our students through STEAM learning experiences) and, as a former teacher who worked in a one-to-one technology learning environment years ago, District leadership collaborated with her to prepare for the launch this year. And when she's not at work, Ms. Priestley is committed to Middle School Cheerleading (both football and basketball) as one of the squad's co-coaches.

Mano en Mano Raises $716 for The Pulsera Project
The Shaker Heights High School Spanish service club Mano en Mano sold more than one hundred bracelets over the past two weeks for the Pulsera Project, a Fair Trade nonprofit organization that connects Central American artists with students in American schools through the sale of colorful handwoven bracelets, or "pulseras."
All of the bracelets were made by artisans in Nicaragua and Guatemala, and all of the money earned is returned to them. This year, Mano en Mano raised $716 selling the bracelets. Great job, students!

District Selects Resolute Educational Solutions LLC as Strategic Plan Partner
The Shaker Heights Schools is pleased to announce the selection of Detroit-based Resolute Educational Solutions LLC to help craft the District's next strategic plan.
Resolute emerged as the District's partner after the Request for Proposal (RFP) process netted 15 responding firms with both national and local footprints. The Strategic Plan Advisory Committee, which consists of 16 stakeholders including community members and District personnel, then interviewed four finalists and made a selection for final consideration by the District. During the screening process, Resolute demonstrated a seamless alignment with the District's focus on student experience and equity.
"Resolute approaches their work as a thought partner through an equity lens with the goal of addressing disparities in educational outcomes. We are looking forward to collaborating with them to shape the direction of the District for years to come," said Dr. David Glasner, Superintendent of Shaker Heights Schools.
Resolute will begin work immediately to facilitate the District's Strategic Planning process, which will include many opportunities for community stakeholder input, with the goal of presenting a completed plan to the Shaker Heights Board of Education in the spring of 2020.

Introducing Abre: Your One-Stop Shop for Information about Your Student
Shaker Heights Schools is excited to introduce
Abre, a new platform that provides you with access to important and useful information that is specific to your student(s). Throughout the year, this portal will evolve, though our goal is for Abre to become your one-stop shop for information about your student, your school(s) and the District.
All families should have received an email from curriculum@shaker.org, which included a student-specific parent access token and instructions on how to set up and log in to your Abre account.
Currently, Abre provides the following information:
- Your student's profile and information
- MAP and state assessment scores
- IEP and 504 information for your student (if applicable)
- Links to ProgressBook, PayForIt, Naviance and more
- Directions and links on how to update contact phone numbers, email, etc.
- Access to PTO resources
- District and building information and announcements
Moving forward, we encourage all families to use Abre to access student information, as the District plans to migrate all links to our parent resources, which are currently available on our website, to one centralized location in Abre. Please note: the District will still continue to communicate directly with our families via email, US Mail, social media, etc.
Thank you for your support and flexibility as we work to improve access to student information for our families.

No School for Students on March 17, 2020
Please note that all schools will be closed to students on Election Day, Tuesday, March 17, 2020 as many of our buildings are polling locations. In making this decision, the Board has considered student and staff safety, as well as limited parking at buildings.
Families with students in Grades K-6, please note: The District has confirmed with the City of Shaker Heights Recreation Department that the Fundaze program will be offered on March 17. Stay tuned to

|
The Shaker Heights High School Varsity Field Hockey Team finished its 40th anniversary season with a record of 19-2, falling to Columbus Academy 1-0 in a heart breaker of a state championship on Saturday, November 2.
Head Coach Jen Clarke (SHHS, '92) said the entire coaching staff was so proud of the team, who came together and grew so much this season. "Through tremendous hard work and phenomenal leadership from the captains and senior class, they developed into resilient and confident female student athletes. The chemistry of this team was contagious and it overflowed into the Shaker community," Coach Clarke said. "We are extremely appreciative and thankful for the support from our amazing parents, Don Readance and the entire athletic department, Eric Juli, fellow Shaker athletes and coaches, teachers and the whole Shaker community. The friendships and memories that were created this season are what the girls, coaches and parents will remember for the rest of our lives. This team will always have a special place in my heart."
