Join us for the launch of  AVNU (autonomous vehicle - neighborhood use) - the driverless microtransit service that will serve the Crozet area over the next several months. This service is a partnership of Albemarle County, JAUNT Inc., Perrone Robotics, Inc., and Smart Mobility, Inc. to pilot a new, autonomous transit shuttle.

Cybersecurity Basics for Managers (7/15-7/25)
 
 
 
Are you being asked to shape how your organization protects its customer data or email systems?  Are your customers relying on you to protect their payment information?  Do you need a place to start learning about fundamental cybersecurity concepts?

This two-week crash course is designed for leaders, professionals, and entrepreneurs who have a limited technical background related to cybersecurity, data security, and information technology.  The JMU Cybersecurity Basics for Managers noncredit certificate program is discussion-oriented and formatted for the working professional.

Participants will gain knowledge that can inform their strategies to mitigate cybersecurity risks, secure data and information, build secure infrastructure, and hire qualified personnel and vendors.

Kick back, relax, and create some robots with teachers in your area at  Pale Fire Brewing Co.! Talk with peers about edtech, bring curriculum ideas & questions, or use the  Hummingbird Robotics Kit to make your own robot.

No programming/robotics experience required! Technology and craft materials will be provided. Brews and other beverages are available for purchase at the bar.

The Startup Experience | 2 Day Workshop (7/19-7/20)

The Startup Experience is a interactive 2-day workshop designed to teach you what it takes to get a business started. Startup teams (groups of 5 to 6 people) will work together learn about Startup team formation, problem definition, user analysis, idea creation, business model innovation, customer development, prototyping, web development, fundraising and professional pitching, and get hands-on experience with the tools they need to create a successful startup company!

You will start the first day off with an overview of what entrepreneurship is and then dig into the Startup Experience model, founded by Henrik Scheel out of the Silicon Valley. This model has been taught all over the globe and the SCCF is looking forward to bringing to the Shenandoah Valley again this July.  Space is limited.

JMU's Science Explorers Camps (July 2019)
 
 
 James Madison University
Using JMU's unique facilities such as the John C. Wells Planetarium, Science on a Sphere, among others, camp-goers will get to explore different areas of science, including biology, earth science, chemistry, forensic science, physics and astronomy and more! Science Explorers Camp will touch on topics covered in the former Space Explorers Camp, while introducing new concepts, activities, and STEM challenges. 

JMU's Science Explorers Camp provides hands-on learning opportunities to 1st through 11th grade students. These camps seek to grow leaders and problems solvers of tomorrow, by building knowledge and curiosity today! 

All teachers and students working with the campers will go through a teacher training program so that they are ready to help your children actively engage in learning!

Join us at the Shenandoah Valley Discovery Museum for a summer of adventure, education, and fun!  There are camp experiences for everyone, from preschool to high school! All programs are led by qualified professionals, with curriculum enhanced by the SVDM education team. The Discovery Museum is running a full summer of enriching fun from June to August.

Virginia's Role in the Innovation Economy

You are invited to take the following 10-minute survey  regarding ideas and opinion's on what the state's role should be in the innovation economy. This survey will remain in effect through the end of July. ALL Virginians with an interest in this topic are encouraged to complete the survey and register their voice.

During the 2019 Legislative Session, two bills were considered that would have created a new authority or made several changes to an existing authority around funding and oversight of research commercialization, entrepreneurship, and innovation economic development initiatives in the Commonwealth.  Although there was universal support for more efficient use of state resources, the legislature decided - due to concerns addressed by many affected stakeholders - to delay pending an effort led by the Secretary of Commerce and Trade to assess and recommend a legislative plan - statewide-backed and driven by a diverse workgroup of subject matter experts - to consolidate, restructure, and transition programs. This legislative proposal WILL be data driven. This survey will help catalog ideas from Virginian's who can and cannot attend the regional Town Hall series this spring/summer.
