Confession time - I confess that when the incoming ice storm forced us to record the January 25 worship service on the Friday before, it was kind of fun. It brought back memories of those early months of Covid when a small group of worship leaders gathered on Thursday mornings (maybe Fridays) to record the service. We each had our space in which we had to stand and different microphones we had to use to avoid sharing our germs. I also was reminded how the musicians, AV people, and ministers bonded together over that shared experience.
A week later, however, when we had to worship on livestream only on a Sunday morning, I had a different response. it reminded me of the negatives we experienced during Covid worship – no choir providing anthems and supporting our worship music; preaching to an empty sanctuary with no one waving from the balcony and no one to greet in-person; no energy coming from the people gathered in the pews; and no young disciples with their inquisitive minds and willingness to explore scripture (or doing whatever else the leader has in mind that day!).
In some respects, the liturgy is the liturgy. But, how the gathered congregation engages the liturgy and is engaged by the liturgy (not to mention engaging each other), makes worshipping in-person such a powerful experience. I am very grateful that technology allows us to worship even when the weather does not allow us to gather together; I am very grateful that technology allows people who are unable to be in-person on any given Sunday to still join in worship. I am also very grateful for the chance most weeks to gather with the congregation in our sanctuary to worship God live, where we can feel the energy of the gathered congregation, experience the mistakes that come with live worship, and live into the possibility that something might happen that I would want to be there to see or hear! However you join us for worship, I hope you get that sense of excitement of being part of something more than yourself, of sharing the worship experience with others; and finding God in our midst.
Yours in Christ,
Richard Culp

Aging with a Plan Series
Sundays, February 15, 22, & March 1
Noon - 1:30 p.m., Room 206/208
Lunch at Super Wednesday Prices
If you want to learn more about common aging issues, have questions, and want to create a plan for your future, join us for this three-part Lunch and Learn series from noon to 1:30pm on February 15, 22, & March 1.
On February 15, we will learn about residence and care options available in our community, what they cost and possible ways to pay those costs (Medicare, Medicaid, VA, long-term care insurance). Next week, February 22, we will cover all the legal documents -- Powers of Attorney, Guardianship, Wills/Trusts -- as well as the powers and duties of an agent under a Power of Attorney. Our final week, March 1, we will discuss those difficult end-of-life care choices family members often must make and we'll also talk about funeral options (ranging from traditional to becoming part of a tree).
These legal questions are important for people of all ages! The series will be led by our own DeLila Bergan, a retired elder law attorney and a practicing bioethicist/mediator who works with families who are dealing with aging concerns. Bring your questions! For more info, contact DeLila Bergan at dtbergan@verizon.net. No aging experience required to attend! Sign up for lunch in Realm.

Ed Moorehead Scholarship
We are pleased to announce that a scholarship fund for graduating high school seniors has been established in memory of Ed Moorehead by his wife, Mary. Those of you who knew Ed will undoubtedly remember him as a mentor who inspired countless young people through his genuine interest and involvement in their lives. We are grateful for Mary’s generosity in establishing this meaningful endowment as a lasting legacy and fitting tribute to Ed’s life of service to others.
St. Andrew’s seniors are encouraged to apply for this renewable scholarship, which will be available for the first time this spring. Students who wish to be considered will need to complete an application, write an essay, and provide two adult references – one from St. Andrew and one from their high school. More than one student may be eligible to receive this scholarship in any given year. Apply using the application below. Please send completed applications to Darhyl Ramsey, d.ramsey2@verizon.net.
