Pastor's Column

As expected, we had a wonderful world communion service (be sure and thank our pastoral resident, Chrissy Stevens, for putting together the liturgy and arranging all the different elements of the service!) that highlighted the many different languages people in the congregation speak. For some of our worship leaders, the language they spoke was their first language; for others, the language was acquired through study or living abroad. Amazingly, we could have had several others languages shared with us because we have members and regular attendees from even more countries than we heard represented.

Two reflections from World Communion Sunday:

  • Music often expresses best who we are as a congregation. The hymns reflected different cultures; Chrissy had a soloist sing a verse of each hymn in another language (French, German, and Spanish); the words of the hymns invited us to imagine how God is at work in the world; the Anthem and Offertory brought energy and spark to the worship. St. Andrew continues to be blessed by the quality and variety of musical gifts shared each week.
  • The many languages shared in worship reveal the many amazing gifts found among the members at St. Andrew, but also remind us that we are a congregation that fits into mostly one demographic. World Communion Sunday shares our aspiration to be a community of faith that transcends cultures and languages. Wouldn’t it be amazing if each week in worship we heard different languages being spoken not as an example, but as the norm that reflected a multi-cultural community of faith of believers in Jesus Christ!

On a personal note, I am overwhelmed by the show of affection and the outpouring of kind comments shared in celebrating my ten years serving as pastor and head-of-staff at St. Andrew. My cup overflows with gratitude for your support of me, my work among you, and my family. I also want to reiterate that my ministry would not be possible without the terrific staff at St. Andrew. From the part-timers who offer their gifts as if this were their full-time job to office staff who work behind the scenes to make things happen to custodial staff who clean, set-up, and take down to program staff who share their wonderful talents with us to the pastoral staff who love the congregation we serve, I am indebted to all the work they do. We collaborate, plan, push and prod each other as we work to lead this congregation in hearing and responding to God’s call. We may not always get it right, but we always have the right people working to make things happen. Thanks be to God for all the St. Andrew staff.

Yours in Christ,

Richard

Parents' Night Out

Saturday, October 10

Parents’ Night Out is a program for the young families of St. Andrew. The program has a two-fold purpose: it gives parents an opportunity to spend quality time together without their children and it gives the children an evening of fun, age-appropriate activities with their friends at St. Andrew. The evening runs from 4:00pm to 8:30pm for infants-5yrs old in the Nursery. In the Rec Center, Kindergarten-elementary age will meet 4:00pm to 8:30pm, with pick-up from the Nursery. Registration is required on Realm or email Karen Raabe at karen@standrewdenton.com.

Theology on Tap

Monday, October 12

Theology On Tap will meet Monday, October 12, 6:30pm, at Denton County Brewing Company (in the back room). Our topic is “Lord of the Conscience”. We will be discussing parts of the PC(USA)’s Social Witness Policy and why “Presbyterian” will never be a political party. We hope you will join us for the conversation!

Denton Christian Preschool Supply Drive

Denton Christian Preschool has over 40 “at risk” 3- & 4-year-olds presently enrolled. The school is committed to developing the skills and meeting the needs of these students, allowing them to begin kindergarten at or above grade level.

The Diaconate is beginning to gather school supplies for these children as these tools will help them improve their learning experiences. These items will be collected in August through the end of September and include the following:

Glue bottles, Play Doh, 9 x 7 composition books, washable markers, dry erase markers, red or green pocket folders, watercolors, crayons, toilet paper, white construction paper, AA batteries, and 9 volt batteries.

You may either donate supplies or make a financial donation for the purchase of supplies. Your financial contribution can be made via Realm by visiting the Give Page and choosing “Denton Christian Preschool” from the fund down menu.

The donated items may be placed in the marked bin in the Narthex, beside the coffee urns.

If you have any questions, please contact Jim White at: acewalton1965@gmail.com.

Thank you for your generosity.

St. Andrew Diaper Drive

September Update

All through September and October, St. Andrew will be participating in a Diaper Drive for Interfaith Denton. Larger Children’s sizes 4, 5, 6, and 7, plus pullups sizes 3T/4T and 4T/5T are needed. Baby wipes and 12 diaper bags are also on their wish list. In 2025, Interfaith Denton helped over 300 households with over $7400 in diapers and wipes.

Diaper Fact #1: SNAP and WIC do not cover the cost of diapers.

Diaper Fact #2: Families can receive diapers once a month and wipes up to 6 times a year.

Diaper Fact #3: 1 in 2 U.S. families struggle to afford enough diapers to keep their children clean, healthy, and dry.

Donations can be placed in the basket marked Diaper Drive in the narthex, through Realm using the Give page and choosing Diaper Drive from the drop-down menu, making a donation in church using the pew envelopes and writing “Diaper Drive” on the envelope, and by ordering online using the QR code in the Shield next week. Thank you to all that help our local children have a safe and healthy life.
