A message from The Head of School

|
Our students and faculty came back from Winter Break refreshed and excited. After some cases of COVID-19 before the break, being able to all be back in person has been a gift. Since we returned, two moments stand out for me, both including guests in the school.
On Friday, January 7th we had the honor of hosting Steven Schauder, Executive Director Jewish Family Service of Greater Harrisburg (JFS), as our guest for our Kabbalat Shabbat and Rosh Chodesh Shevat program. He spoke with our students about the important work that JFS does in our community, highlighting the new project of resettling refugees from Afghanistan. Our students immediately wanted to help the refugees, and Mr. Schauder asked them to help by donating car seats and gently used or new toys for the children who are being resettled in our area. We have already collected a car seat and several toys! We invite the larger Silver Academy community to join us in this project as well; items for donation can be brought to the school office by January 21st. Click here if you would like to learn more about this project and how you can help.
On Tuesday afternoon I received a wonderful email from one of our school parents. I would like to share it with you:
Mrs. Sofian,
I cannot stop smiling after being given the opportunity to help at lunchtime today. I was so impressed by all of the kids’ manners and it made me so happy to see how happy they all were to be together and at school. The teachers all had smiles on their faces and it was clear what a big part they play in making the school such an amazing place for our kids to learn and grow. It didn’t hurt that I also got to see my own two kids so happy at The Silver Academy!
Thank you so much for giving me this opportunity.
Emily Freeburn
We welcome our community to help our students by volunteering. If you would like to join us in school and help to serve lunch, please click here to sign up. We would love to have you!
B’Shalom,
Samara

The 5th and 6th grade students at Silver have just wrapped up the novel Island of the Blue Dolphins, by Scott O’Dell. As the students quickly learned, the tale of the courageous protagonist, Karana, rang with more truth than they realized. O’Dell based his main character off of the true story of the Lone Woman of San Nicolas. In addition to the novel, the students learned more about the Channel Islands, which includes the island of San Nicolas. After choosing a plant and animal that is found on the island, or in the surrounding waters, the students learned the steps necessary to write a research paper. They learned strategies for note-taking, how to construct body paragraphs, as well as introductions and conclusions. Finally, students learned the importance of when and how to cite their sources, as well as the importance of giving credit to other’s work. Just as Karana learned to survive alone on the island, the students learned to survive research writing!

Kindergarten Judaic Studies Update:
In Kindergarten, although Chanukah came extra early this year we found a special way to extend it in our study of the Alef-Bet! We learned the Hebrew letters Nun, Gimel, and Hay, standing for Nace, Gadol Haya (A Great Miracle Happened).
In honor of Rosh Chodesh Shevat we welcomed guests, the First, Second and Third Grade students for Kabbalat Shabbat in our classroom.
With Tu B’Shevat fast approaching, we are enjoying singing the songs “Tu B’Shevat is on its way!” and “HaShkedia Porachat”. We are looking forward to celebrating Tu B’Shevat with a Tu B’Shevat Seder and sample the fruits of Israel.
We are starting a new unit on the Brachot we say from HaMotzei to Shehakol.
We have a new student in our class! Her name is Shai and we learned that her name is Hebrew for gift. The students have been showing her around our classroom and the school and helping her to feel at home.
