A message from The Head of School

Watching our children incorporate our values in their daily lives is one of my favorite parts of working at The Silver Academy. Last week our middah (value) of the week was chesed (kindness). This week, our middah is netzach (perseverance and grit). We combined these values, with our year's theme of kehilah (community) to hold a food drive to benefit Jewish Family Services' Food Pantry. It was wonderful to see the table of food for donation fill up over the course of the week. The students exhibited such joy and pride as they added their family's contribution. Next Tuesday the 2nd and 3rd grade students will be delivering the food to the pantry when they join a special PJ Library program. What a wonderful way to participate in our community while incorporating our values into everyday life!
Speaking of community, I hope you will join us at the Harrisburg Community's Joint Agency Annual Meeting (JAAM) on Wednesday, November 3 on Zoom at 7:00pm. You can register via this link. The Silver Academy is excited to honor two very special people at the JAAM: Mrs. Rebecca Cortes, our 2nd-8th grade Language Arts and Social Studies teacher, will be honored with our Rising Star Award. Mrs. Kimberlea Konowitch, our Director of Business and Development, will be honored with our Silver Star Award. Our students and school community are extremely fortunate to have both of these amazing faculty members at The Silver Academy!
Shabbat Shalom,
Samara

The Sweetness of Learning
Each week in Ganeinu we meet a different letter of the alef-bet, the Hebrew alphabet, and learn some Hebrew vocabulary words that start with that letter, and create a letter page to go in the interactive alef-bet book each student is building. The third letter is Gimmel. Glidah (Ice cream) start with gimmel. The students learned to say "Glidah b'vahkasha (ice cream please)" and were rewarded with water ice… "What," I hear you cry, "Not ice cream?!?" Nope, we had chicken for lunch so we found a tasty non-dairy treat and got to learn about traditional dietary laws along the way. In Ganeinu every moment is a teaching moment.

In first grade, we investigated pumpkins! After learning about the pumpkin life cycle, we measured the height and circumference of a pumpkin. We performed an experiment to see which fruits and vegetables float and which ones sink. We were amazed to discover that pumpkins do float! Then, we cut open our pumpkin and explored the inside. We used our sense of sight, touch and smell to describe the inside of the pumpkin. Students estimated how many seeds there were, but no one even got close. We counted about 590 seeds. Finally, we put some of the seeds into Ziploc bags with a wet paper towel. We hope to see the roots and a sprout!
