A Message from the Head of School
When you initially meet someone, you really never know how important they will be to you or what part they may play in your life. Three years ago, when I met Samara Sofian, I had no idea that she would be stepping into the job of Head of School at The Silver Academy as I enter retirement (for the second, or maybe third time).

The story goes something like this...I was in Rochester, New York at my eldest grandson’s Chanukah party, or celebration for Purim, or end of the year party...it doesn’t matter what we were celebrating...at Hillel (the Jewish Day School that my grandchildren in Rochester attend or did attend) and the Head of School for Hillel, Tracey Glazer, introduced me to a woman, Samara Sofian, who was living in Rochester but who was perhaps looking to make a move to Lancaster in the near future. Knowing that we were searching for a Head of School at Silver, I presented the case for her and her family to hasten their decision to move South, and to explore the job in Harrisburg as the Head of School at Silver. Well, that didn’t happen!! So, I did my best to fill the job myself - by first become the acting Head of School, and then as Head of School. Samara and her family eventually moved to Lancaster and her three beautiful, talented children enrolled at Silver. As luck would have it, the following year she accepted a job at Silver, and now has transitioned to the job of Head of School.

Beshert? Maybe...I believe in things happening for a reason, in being in the right place at the right time or it was just plain and simply...meant to be. Samara is the right person for the job!!! Was it destiny that she should become part of our Silver family? Regardless, we are fortunate to have Samara as the Head of School. She brings to Silver a wealth of knowledge in education and Judiacs, love for the Jewish community, energy and enthusiasm for the continuation and success of our Jewish day school, and the ability to bring all stakeholders together to achieve a positive result. Samara exemplifies all the qualities of a true mensch and our children are fortunate to have her as the leader of The Silver Academy. Whether destiny or just plain old luck, Rochester’s loss is Harrisburg’s gain!!

B'Shalom,
Debra Freeburn, Head of School
What's happening at school...

This week our Kindergarten scientists made a volcano in Science class! Ask them how we did it!!

In Mr. Fortini's computer technology class Middle school students explored how technology helps with the creation of everyday entertainment. This week we particularly explored how music can be produced with the aid computers.

Some of our students were willing to share what they made. Click here to hear their music!

The first grade students were hard at work with Morah Alla preparing for their big performance at this week's Celebration of Light and Learning.
Art class turned into Culinary Arts once again as the students of The Silver Academy baked Chanukah cookies in preparation for the Celebration of Light and Learning
