A Message from the Director of Development
|
|
Hello everyone! Spring is right around the corner and that gives us so much to look forward to; warmer temperatures, longer days, budding trees, blooming flowers and our 75th Anniversary Brunch and Reunion on Sunday, March 22nd. We are looking forward to welcoming families past and present, faculty and staff, alumni, friends, community supporters and local clergy.
Our event Chairs, Lara Novak and Marian Frankston have planned a morning full of meaningful moments and wonderful surprises. It promises to be a joyous celebration. We will be honoring Past School Board Presidents and PTO Presidents. Their commitment to The Silver Academy has ensured that we have arrived at this day of celebration - 75 years!!
The Silver Academy endures as a result of the wonderful and strong community that values and supports its existence. We are so grateful to have you as members of that community.
Please make sure to RSVP and join us. We look forward to seeing you there.
Kol Tuv,
Kimberlea Konowitch
Director of Development

A Peek Inside Our Classes
|
|
The Silver Academy’s annual school Science Fair was held on Wednesday, January 22nd. Our budding scientists did a wonderful job in preparing and presenting their projects. Family, friends, and teachers whom came out to support them were “wowed” by the topics they researched and the results of their experiments. Congratulations go out to Moshe Schertz and Uriel Pavolotzky for earning first place awards. Moshe’s project was “Do Density and Porosity Affect a Woods Capacity to Absorb Water?” Uriel’s project was “Does the Type of Sugar Affect the Amount of Carbon Dioxide Produced during Fermentation by Yeast?” We commend the boys for their excellent work! They will now go on to compete in the Capital Area Science and Engineering Fair in March.

First grade has just begun learning about poetry. To kick off our unit, we learned how to use our 5 senses to create poems. Students used their senses to describe different things. They listened to jazz music and described how it sounded. They looked at a painting by Picasso and described what they saw. Using their sense of taste, they described a chocolate pretzel treat. For smell and touch they described play-doh. They had so much fun with this interactive lesson!

Last Thursday, February 20th, The Jewish Community Foundation held the Year 4 Legacy Celebration. It was such a wonderful event! The Silver Academy was recognized for successful completion of Year 4 of the Central PA community-wide Jewish Legacy Initiative. Members of our team attended and were presented with a certificate and received recognition for the work of our Legacy Committee.
The Legacy program is designed so everyone, not just the wealthy or those with the means to give now, will be able to leave a legacy gift in their will to the Jewish causes they care about. By leaving a legacy gift, you can continue to support the Jewish organizations you care about now even when you are no longer with us. If you are passionate about the work of any Jewish organization, Create A Jewish Legacy (CJL) may be for you. CJL allows anyone to become a philanthropist and offers you an excellent opportunity to do something meaningful even if you are unable to give cash gifts now.
The Silver Academy would like to take this opportunity to recognize our legacy supporters.

Passover Packages for Jewish Service Members
|
|
Imagine trying to celebrate Passover in a foreign land far from family and friends, at a base where you are the only Jew or where the closest kosher foods are a 4 hour drive away? That is the reality for many Jewish service members. This year, you can support our brothers and sisters in the military by sponsoring the 13
th
Soldiers Passover Package Project.
The Jewish Soldiers Project, which started with 10 small Passover packages back in 2008, has grown to serve thousands of Jewish service members across the globe year-round. Through our efforts, we have given support and a sense of community to many Jews who would not otherwise be able to celebrate their faith.
In 2019, the JSP sent over 90 Passover care packages to service members serving in 20 nations including: Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria, Kuwait, Qatar, Korea, Japan, Germany, Italy, England, Poland, Niger and Djibouti (East Africa). For those Jewish soldiers serving on the home front, we sponsored Seders at 2 dozen bases across the US and ships at sea.
For 2020, we anticipate sending over 100 Passover packages serving the needs of many Jews in the military. The packages include: matzos, grape juice, gefilte fish, horseradish, charoset and other items requested.
