A Message from the Head of School
It has been a busy week at The Silver Academy! We have been collecting hats, gloves, scarves and socks that we will sort for distribution on Monday, we had a fantastic Taste of Silver Open House for Ganeinu-1st grade and our Kindergarten-8th grade students went on a fabulous field trip to the Whitaker Center to see "Think Outside the Drum" featuring Grammy-winning Third Coast Percussion!
Next week we are really looking forward to Monday's
Mitzvah Day
(that will also include some great learning about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and a "Mathternoon" with special guests from Mathnasium). We're excited for
Book Character Dress Up Day
on Tuesday. We are also looking forward to Wednesday evening's
A Sample of Silver
, an Open House for 2nd-8th grade. We hope our current 1st-7th grade students and parents will join us for a fun evening featuring dinner, some interesting activities in classrooms and
Science Fair
presentations by our 8th grade students.
Our Scholastic
Book Fair
is Sunday-Friday next week in the JCC Cafe area. Please find some time to stop by and look for some good books. All proceeds go directly to our PTO and teachers to provide books, other classroom materials and special programs for our students.
We are very grateful to our staff and volunteers who work hard to make all of these wonderful events possible for our students and our community.
Shabbat Shalom,
Samara Sofian

A Peek Inside Our Classes
Third Grade
Mrs. Wenzelburger
Over the past few weeks, the third grade students have been reading the book "Third Grade Angels" by Jerry Spinelli. We have been working on our reading, writing, listening, and comprehension skills. In addition, we have also had several class discussions on what it means to be an "angel." In the book, the third graders can earn a "halo" by putting forth their best behavior. Our third graders worked on a writing prompt, which asked what they would do, if they were a third grader in the book, to earn their "halo."

Third Coast Percussion "Think Outside the Drum" Educational Program
On January 16th, The Silver Academy students attended the educational program “Think Outside the Drum” featuring Grammy-winning Third Coast Percussion at the Whitaker Center. This program was presented by Market Square Concerts as part of their “Soundscape” educational outreach program.
It was a fun, interactive, and educational presentation introducing the building blocks of music.
The performance by Third Coast Percussion was interspersed with teaching moments that introduced the building blocks of music (rhythm, melody, and timbre) through active audience participation. The Silver Academy students were involved in a series of interactive activities including clapping, singing, and listening games. Students learned about the extraordinary range of percussion instruments that can be found in cultures around the world, as well as in their own kitchen cabinets.
The Silver Academy students and teachers greatly enjoyed this amazing experience. All of us were even more excited when Sean Connors, an ensemble member and the technical director of Third Coast Percussion who led a singing game during the program, pointed to The Silver Academy students saying "There is some beautiful singing coming from this section." Later on, he added while gesturing and looking at The Silver Academy students, "We present this program all over the country and internationally. And that was some of the most in-tune, beautiful singing we ever heard." That comment was a testament to the high quality music education that students receive at The Silver Academy.

Mitzvah Day
Monday January 20th
While most schools have a

One project that is already underway is our
Hat, Glove, Scarf and Sock Drive running from January 3rd - January 20th.
We are collecting new warm hats, snow gloves, scarves and socks (sizes 10-16) for children in Mrs. Roseman's 4th grade Harrisburg School District class.
