Good things happen everyday at The Silver Academy!
Mrs. Debra Freeburn, Principal
At this time of the year, The Silver Academy begins, or rather continues, the recruiting process for the upcoming school year.  You’ll see Jackie Rubin everywhere!!!  You’ll see her downstairs at the ELC, at the crack of dawn, greeting parents with donuts and coffee, swag bags and information they may need about Silver. You’ll see her at the Midtown Cinema on a Sunday morning, coordinating the efforts of The Silver Academy along with PJ Library - for a movie, followed by crafts and of course a snack!!! Don’t forget Jackie’s part in MItzvah Day...she coordinated the activities on MLK Day and orchestrated an educational and fun day for all students, both Silver students and their guests!!  Oh, and let’s not forget the Bamboo Frozen Yogurt fundraiser !!!  Jackie is everywhere promoting The Silver Academy.

Why, you may ask, is Jackie so passionate about Jewish Day School...it’s probably because she knows, first hand, the importance that it plays in a young family’s life.  Both she and her husband Scott (who you will also see at all the events) attended Jewish Day schools.  They ARE what Silver is all about!!!  They know the importance of leading a meaningful, values based, Jewish life.  They are examples of young adults who are grounded in their identity, leaders in the community, and believe in the highest level of education.  They know what they want for their children and they know that they can’t and won’t receive this kind of education anywhere else. They love that their kids LOVE to come to school.  And, they know that they are learning the tools, the strategies, and the morals to lead meaningful lives. Thank you, Jackie (and Scott), for your commitment to The Silver  Academy!

Shabbat Shalom,
Debra

A Peek Inside Our Classrooms
Kindergarten General Studies
Mrs. Kate Carpenter

January is drawing to a close, and the 100 th Day of School is right around the corner. Students are ready, as we have been building numbers to 100 ever since the first day of school, using a 100’s chart, 10 frames, and popsicles sticks. On the 100 th Day we’ll celebrate by watching a fun movie - "The Mouse and the Motorcycle".

Students have now met and learned 40 sight words, and we use these words on Tuesdays and Wednesdays during our Kid Writing sessions. We’ve also been working on our consonant and short vowel sounds, and they come in handy as students write original fiction stories about the wonderful land of "Imagica."

The Big Idea we’re exploring in History is: Why do people come to America? In November we learned about the Pilgrims who came for religious freedom. Now we are beginning to learn the story of how and why West Africans came to America in the 17 th and 18 th centuries. As this story unfolds, we keep in mind what Dr. Martin Luther King taught us: “The arc of history is long, but it bends towards justice.”
Art Class
Mrs. Debra Rietmulder

Art is a favorite class of many students here at The Silver Academy. Students use a variety of techniques and media while creating beautiful works of art. They also learn about famous artists and their unique art styles and techniques. Here is an insight into a few of our student projects.

Eighth Grade Artwork
 Fall leaf glue batik

Students used acrylic paint and white glue on white cotton fabric to create beautiful hanging art.

Sixth and Seventh Grades
Monochromatic, paper mosaic landscapes

A concentration of tints and shades of a single color was used to make this interesting artwork.

Fourth and Fifth Grades
Color intensity Op Art project

Students used colored pencils and black markers to design this style of art.

Third Grade
Radiating paint designs

This art was made by first painting leaves with white paint and pressing them onto black paper. Then students used paint brush bristles to make the design around the leaves.

First and Second Grades
Abstract Landscapes Using Warm and Cool Colors

Students used markers and/or colored pencils to make this art.

Kindergarten
This tempra paint project was a study of primary and secondary colors.
