Our Students are in Israel!
|
|
Our 7th and 8th graders are thrilled to finally be in Israel...the homeland they learned to love while studying its culture, history and language here at The Silver Academy! (For some students, this has been 9 years...since Ganeinu!)
After a spirited send-off at school, complete with flags, chants and high fives from all of our students, faculty and staff, our travelers packed their bags and started their journey. They arrived in Israel today! We haven't heard much from them yet, but will be sharing their adventures on our
Facebook page .
As you know, an opportunity like this for young people is only possible through support from many caring people. We wish to thank EVERYONE who has donated their time, talents and gifts to make this meaningful trip possible for our students.
Here is a short video of our send-off celebration:

Our students in 3rd-6th grade love Ozobots! What is an Ozobot? It is a tiny robot that is lots of fun and can be controlled through its sensors and coding. Younger students control the Ozobot by drawing black pathways for it to follow and adding certain color-combination commands to tell the robot to turn, change colors, dance and do other "tricks". Older students create programs on the computer using a coding language called Ozoblockly. The programs are then downloaded to the Ozobot who follows the instructions. While students are excited and enjoy working with Ozobots, they are also learning valuable coding and problem solving skills as they creatively command their Ozobots to complete specific tasks.

Seventh graders learned about polyhedrons through hands-on exploration. First, they measured the flat nets to find surface area. Then they construct polyhedrons and calculated volume. Finally, they created mobiles of their work.

This morning our students participated in a very meaningful Yom HaShoah program. Each student had a yahrtzeit candle with the name and a little information about someone who died during the Holocaust. Older students were paired with younger students, and together they read about the person on the candle and considered a question that they would like to have asked that person. Students wondered about their families, livelihood, and favorite pastimes. Following this conversation, everyone lit their candles. Rabbi Gewirtz led a thoughtful lesson on the Holocaust and we concluded with hearing the siren that is sounded in Israel on Yom HaShoah and the Kel Maeli prayer.
