A Message from the Head of School
|
|
It’s hard to believe that we are approaching the end of the 2019 school year. The year has flown by, for me anyway, and I can honestly say it has been a good year. As I become reflective and look at the year critically, I target areas that we did well and also consider areas where we might be able to improve. Here are some thoughts:
In a poem by Hayim Bialik he describes the role of a Jewish day school as, “The laboratory for the creation of our nation's soul.” The Silver Academy is much like a laboratory that daily, weekly, and monthly, engages its students academically, while at the same time blends together the values of Judaism with a solid, state-of-the-art general studies education. Every day we ignite the spiritual sparks within our students. We foster each of our students' religious growth and Middot (virtues) through the study of Torah, a commitment to Mitzvot and through acts of Chesed (kindness). Our entire school is inculcated with a love for and appreciation of the People of Israel and the State of Israel. We are proud that our graduating students are ready to pursue high school and meet any challenge with knowledge and understanding.
Every parent, every teacher, and every student is a part of the laboratory. But that is only the first step in enabling the Silver Academy student to reach his or her full academic and emotional potential. Our faculty and staff are the best and are deeply committed to this challenge. Our parents and families are amazing and support Silver and their student(s) academically while never hesitating to pitch in and lend a hand. Because of this deep commitment, our students become lifelong learners. Their lives are enhanced and they become active citizens, who are self-assured and personally and professionally fulfilled.
Thank you, again, for being the best cheerleaders and supporting The Silver Academy.
Shabbat Shalom,
Debra

Race for Education & Lag B'Omer Field Day
Mrs. Lindsay Hameroff

Last Thursday afternoon, Silver Academy students enjoyed a joint Race for Education and Lag B’Omer program. Students, staff, and families were motivated by upbeat music as they jogged together to raise money for our PTO. We were especially honored to have Mrs. Dalton join our race in her final run before retirement. Thanks so much to all of our sponsors, and to everyone who donated to this great fundraiser!
Afterwards, we celebrated Lag B’Omer with field day activities. Our two teams each represented a special
middah
; the white team was assigned
Hochma
(wisdom), while the blue team embodied
Tzedek
(righteousness). Teams presented cheers and flags that showcased their color and theme in both English and Hebrew. Then they broke out into small groups for competitive games and relays, before ending the day with the fan-favorite game of tug of war, and a sweet treat. The students really enjoyed an afternoon full of
ruach (spirit) and fun...
even the rainy weather couldn't keep us down!

Math 24 Competition
Mrs. Jane Dalton

Imagine this! Students gave up recess every Monday so they could play Math 24. WOW! Why did they do this? Because they love the math game and to compete in the Math 24 Competition at the end of the year. On May 22nd we had our own Math 24 competition with students competing in their own age groups. Winners of the Division #1 were: Elez Bell, Moshe Schertz, Nadav Sofian, and Adam Brodsky. Winner of the Division #2 was Abie Schertz. Others who participated all year are: Uriel Pavolotzky, Elle Beck, Ariella Jackson, Meital Pavolotzky, Avi Harringer, and Michael Beck. Congratulations to everyone!

1st and 2nd Grade Special Celebration

Mazel Tov to our 1st & 2nd grade students!
We had a very meaningful celebration during this week! Mazel Tov to our 1st grade students on receiving their first Siddur and a big Mazel Tov to 2nd grade students, who were each presented with a Chumash! The celebration was filled with dancing, singing, and theatrical interpretations of three Chumash stories (
b'reshit, lech lechah and
receiving the Torah). Rabbi Muroff and Rabbi Daniela Szuster (mother of 2nd grader, Yael Povolotzky) gave an inspiring D'var Torah. Of course, following this joyful celebration, there was cake and other refreshments. Morah Alla, the parents and all the guests are so proud of every student and their accomplishments! Please congratulate our maturing students!

Students Perform "Peter Pan Jr." at the Jewish Home
Our Music Theater Club has been practicing and perfecting their performance of "Peter Pan Jr." for months, and last week they finally brought the show to the stage for the first time! Members of the Jewish Home were treated to an afternoon performance, where they truly enjoyed the show and music performed by these talented, energetic young people!
Come tonight at 7:00 to the last performance of "Peter Pan Jr."
...you do not want to miss the adorable fairies, swashbuckling pirates and adventures of the Darling children!

Mrs. Marina Cherepinsky

Silver Students joined students from throughout the region for the Young Persons' Concert at the Symphony. What a wonderful compliment to their music education. They even saw a Silver alumnus play first violin!

Our thoughts are with the family of Morton Spector. Mort was a beloved figure in our community and active in numerous causes throughout his life. Mort's contributions to the Yeshiva/Silver Academy are too numerous to count. In addition to serving as board president, Mort began and ran the Silver Academy Foundation, which has contributed essential funds to the operation of the school over many years. He has been a stalwart board member, fundraiser, and friend of the Silver Academy. Through his challenging year of illness, he continued to promote the Silver Academy to his many friends and visitors. We extend our condolences to his wife, Alyce, and children, Stephen, Harry and Wendy.
Also, we send our condolences to Moises Leiferman and his family on the passing of Moises's mother, Raquel Masri Leiferman.
May the memory of Mort Spector and Raquel Masri Leiferman always be a blessing. May their families be comforted along those who mourn among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem.
