Light...and Sparkle

We started off last week with picture day...always a day for the students to sparkle!! In addition, parent conferences were held and we welcomed the opportunity to share the accomplishments of our students with their parents. CBS Channel 21 news visited Silver and Sherry Christian, News Anchor, interviewed Emily Fleming about her mitzvah of giving up her birthday gifts in order to help a local agency. Emily was so excited to give a donation to the Susquehanna Service Dogs, a local non-profit that breeds, raises, and trains dogs to be placed with people who are physically disabled or have psychiatric disabilities. Emily loved being interviewed, and she just shined!! Lastly we ended the week with Daylight Saving Time looming over us!!

Did you know that Benjamin Franklin was the first, in the 1780’s, to unintentionally suggest a version of what we now call Daylight Saving Time (DST). He probably never imagined the complications it might cause in modern day society. At the time, the benefits were evident...we lived in an agrarian society that needed to maximize sunlight hours. But I don’t think Ben understood the impact such shifts could have on our circadian rhythms, possibly stressing our mind and our body? But why, you may ask, am I discussing daylight savings time? Because the shift in time may be causing your children to get up earlier and not get the adequate sleep that they require...for at least a week or so, until they adjust. Fortunately, this is easy to ‘fix’ by simply adjusting your child’s sleep time and understanding that the change in time may cause them to be sleepier, more irritable, and make their sleep disrupted for a week or so....similar to jet lag. Soon, your bright and shining child will adjust!! This week we look forward to welcoming Shabbat an hour earlier, and as you know, Friday dismissal will occur an hour earlier as well.

Thanks again to all of the people who have helped and continue to volunteer to make phone calls, and solicitation for the Annual Campaign, and for those who come up with brilliant ideas to raise the necessary funds to keep The Silver Academy operating and thriving. A special shout out to Shari Dym who is doing an amazing job of coordinating and organizing these efforts and is the main ‘Sparkle’ behind the light of education at The Silver Academy!!

Second Grade General Studies
Mrs. Brandy Hurley

Check out our Native American homes! Second graders have been studying several Native American tribes such as Cherokee, Comanche, and the tribes of the Pacific Northwest. By looking at pictures of various homes, they were able to make inferences about where the tribes lived and what natural resources they had available for building their homes. Students used this knowledge to construct their own models. Stop by to see the second grade projects outside our classroom!

Middle School gets flipped!
The Jewish Literacy Program for Middle School was conceived four years ago as an opportunity to include instruction on topics for which there was not adequate time during the school day. By utilizing what has become known as “flipped education”, using homework as instructional time and reinforcing the learning in school, the Judaic Studies Middle School curriculum has been significantly enriched.

For homework, Monday through Thursday nights, students follow a link on Rabbi Gewirtz’s wiki to ProPofs Quiz Maker’s web site. There, they read a short written presentation about the day’s topic and answer a question. Students who prefer to (also) learn through the auditory modality are able to watch a short “Screencastify” video about the topic before they answer the daily question. Rabbi Gewirtz receives the responses immediately and is able to prepare accordingly for the next day. During the following day's class, all that is required is a five minute interactive review of the home lesson, tailored to the previous night’s results.

The Tishre holidays were the first subjects this year. Presently, a unit on “Blessings” is being studied which will merge with the “Gratitude” theme of the Thanksgiving holiday.
See you Sunday!
