A Message from the Assistant Head of School
There are so many wonderful things going on at The Silver Academy!

Our Grandparent and Grandfriend Day was absolutely wonderful! Our students and their guests baked challah from scratch, had a fun STEM challenge, learned a Hebrew song and a new dance. Our teachers and staff really put together a special afternoon! Below you can see some great pictures from the event.

Preparing our students to be responsible citizens is an important component of the Silver Academy curriculum. On Election Day, several of our Middle School students ran for Student Council positions. They delivered articulate, thoughtful speeches to the whole student body. I was truly impressed with the poise and confidence they displayed as they gave their speeches. I was even more impressed as I saw the younger students truly interested in what the older students had to say. We highlighted the importance of being an informed voter and choosing the candidate you feel is best qualified for the position, not just the person you know or like best. The elections were very close; you can see the results below. The highlight of election day for me was watching the graceful and supportive way that all the candidates and students handled the results. The Student Council has already had their first meeting and has some great plans underway for special days and the school store.

Last Friday our Middle School students had their second visit to The Jewish Home of Greater Harrisburg as part of the Better Together program. This program has quickly become a highlight for the students. They truly enjoy getting to know their Senior partners. The focus of this visit was Thanksgiving and Personal Pilgrimages. After having a delicious lunch, everyone shared how they and their families came to live in Central Pennsylvania. They also shared favorite Thanksgiving family traditions and recipes. Their visit culminated in making personal pumpkin pies together. Everyone is looking forward to their next visit on December 13!

There are, of course, fantastic things going on in our classrooms. Please read the highlights from our some of our teachers.

Shabbat Shalom,
Samara Sofian
Assistant Head of School

What's happening at school...

In Ms. Romano's class the 3rd and 4th grade are learning about rounding numbers, as well as the rules for rounding.

Last week in Kindergarten Judaics, the children had lots of hands on fun learning about Parshat Noach. They built the 3 levels of Noach's Taiva (ark), floated paper Taivas in water and for Shabbat Party they made yummy edible Taivas! This week we visited Avraham's Ohel (tent) and were guests of Morah Tamara and Ganeinu. Shabbat Shalom, with love from Morah Aviva & Kindergarten.

In Middle School English Language Arts, the students are reading and analyzing short stories. This week they studied Edgar Allen Poe and his short story,  The Tell-Tale Heart.  Students wrapped up the week by analyzing the tone and mood of different sections of the classic tale. They then acted out their scenes to demonstrate the differences in the tone and mood that can be found throughout the story.
Grandparent and Grandfriend Day was a success! We had such a great time baking with everyone and can't wait to see you all again.
Students gave their speeches in attempts to secure their spot as a member of the 2019-2020 Silver Academy Student Council.

In Mr. Fortini's Computer Technology class, 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students have moved up from MIT's entry level programming tool "Scratch" and started their journey into the world of Javascript. Rudimentary Javascript programming with the addition of HTML and CSS will give our students the necessary tools to design websites, video games, calculators and more.
