A Message from the Assistant Head of School
|
|
In Pirke Avot we learn “It is not the study that is essential, but rather the action (1:17).” At The Silver Academy we strive to provide our students with regular opportunities to apply what they learn. Last Friday’s Rosh Chodesh program was a great example of this. In preparation for Rosh Hashanah, our students, joined by several family and community members, enjoyed tasting different varieties of apples and honeys. Before the tasting, the students learned a little about the science of taste, identifying the different parts of the tongue that experience different types of taste. During the tasting itself, students put their scientific method knowledge to good use, followed by using their math skills to graph their favorite varieties. We discovered that graphing our favorites could inform our choices for future purchases of apple and honey varieties. Students then used their English skills to choose “juicy” descriptive adjectives to discuss the apple varieties. Not only was this program a fun way to get ready for Rosh Hashanah, it was a great opportunity for our students to see the connections between their secular and Jewish studies while providing them with a chance to apply their knowledge.
Our celebrations of our fall Jewish holidays continued this week with a meaningful Tashlich program on Wednesday morning, led by our Middle School students. A few of our students wrote a nice article about Tashilich and Tzom Gedalia that you can read below. We hope those who are in Harrisburg will join us for the community Sukkah hop on Monday, October 14th, our “Rainforest Sukkah Adventure” program with PJ LIbrary and the community’s Sukkot Progressive Brunch, both on Sunday, October 20th. Our Middle School families are holding a Soup in the Sukkah dinner and fundraiser on October 17th; proceeds will help fund their field trips.
We hope that you had a wonderful Rosh Hashanah and wish you a meaningful Yom Kippur and Sukkot.
G’mar Chitmah Tovah, may you be sealed in the Book of Life for a good year.
Samara Sofian
Assistant Head of School

The power of math
The 3rd grade was learning place value this week and they were learning how big numbers were. Ziva built 9,750 using the thousands, hundreds, tens, and ones blocks and she was amazed that it was almost as tall as her.

D&D Club is off to a great start!
|
|
When the Middle School students petitioned to start the Dungeons & Dragons (D&D) Club at The Silver Academy, they showed their persuasive argument skills and their willingness to accept the challenge of a Middot (Jewish values) overlay in the story line. At the first meeting of the club, the students began to create their characters and saw how math enters into this fun game. Dungeon Master Moshe Schertz, of our 8th grade class, led the story as the other students began to create their characters.

Wednesday morning we went down to the Susquehanna River to do the Minhag of Tashlich. Tashlich is when we go to a body of water (preferably with fish life) to experience a prophetic metaphor for Teshuva. The prophet Micha was trying to give people a visual example of how things could really disappear (swept away by the sea) and give them confidence that G-d could really forgive their sins. Some have the custom to throw a piece of bread into the water. This custom is Halachicly controversial, so we didn’t throw the bread in the water.

Tzom Gedalia is the day after Rosh Hashannah. This fast day commemorates the murder of Gedalia and the exile of Israel because of it. Gedalia was the Jewish governor of Israel appointed by Nebuchadnezzar, King of Babylonia to give the Jewish population some self-rule, and he was the only hope of the Jews at that time to live in the land of Israel. He was killed by Ishmael, the son of Nethaniah, a descendant of the royal house of Zedekiah, the last king of Judah, who was jealous of Gedalia who was not a descendant of David
.
Nebuchadnezzar was furious that the Jews would kill the governor that he appointed, and most Jews were forced to leave Israel. And thus, we fast.
