A Message From Our Head of School
Mrs. Debra Freeburn
Every school year brings with it excitement and energy, opportunities and change. This school year is no exception! The Silver Academy is focused on providing each and every student with an exceptional and well-rounded educational experience. By working with the parents and families of our students, as well as the Harrisburg Jewish community, we will experience an engaging and enriching 2017-18 school year.

The Silver Academy is excited to partner with the PJ Library to host activities. The first activity this year will be held on Sunday, September 10, at Strites Orchard Farm Market and Bakery, where we will be picking apples and having pizza.

You won't want to miss Silver Academy's Back-to-School Night on September 13th or our first Shabbat Showcase on Friday, September 15th at noon. This event will feature Harrisburg native and author Debra Hervitz. Join us for lunch and share the joy of reading with our students.

In addition, we are beginning a partnership with the Harrisburg City School District and Melrose Elementary School's STEM Lab and Gifted Program. The opportunities are endless when professionals join together and share their knowledge and expertise. I will keep you updated on these exciting activities.

Have a wonderful Shabbos!
Warmly,
Debra

Inside the Classroom
Ganeinu with Morah Tamara
As an introduction to both shabbat and Rosh Hashana, Ganeinu baked sweet round challah.
Science with Mrs. Gaughan
Our fourth and fifth grade scientists were asked to determine the exact mass or amount of matter present in various types of substances. They used the triple beam balance to show that matter can be quantified by describing its mass

Rosh Chodesh Project
Mrs. Lindsay Hameroff
Rosh Chodesh  (  ראש חודש‎) is the start of a new month on the Hebrew calendar, and is marked by the birth of a new moon. In observance of  Rosh Chodesh,  Silver students will gather as a community on a monthly basis to observe the holiday and work on a creative project that can be used meaningfully at home. During these events, students will be working with a  chavruta  (partner) from a different grade, which provides an exciting opportunity to strengthen relationships between older and younger members of our school community.

Our first  Rosh Chodesh event was held this past Tuesday, September 5th. Our kickoff activity centered on the new month of  Elul, during which we celebrate Rosh Hashanah. As a community, we discussed the symbolism of dipping apples into honey, noting that the sweetness of honey represents our hope for "sweetness" in the upcoming year.

Students then created a honey set to use for this holiday tradition, by painting a honeycomb stick and packaging it with a small jar of honey. We hope everyone enjoys having a small piece of Silver at their holiday table. L'Shanah Tova!
