Welcome to The Sixth Sense - the monthly newsletter of Brooklyn Community Board 6, serving the neighborhoods of Carroll Gardens/South Brooklyn, Cobble Hill, Columbia Street Waterfront, Gowanus, Park Slope and Red Hook.
Visually, October is arguably one of the most beautiful months in the City. We get to enjoy nature's bounty of colors through the fall foliage. As Camus observed, "Autumn is a second spring where every leaf is a flower." We're also fortunate enough to live in a community well-endowed with spectacular art made by the hands of local residents--amateurs, hobbyists and professionals alike. We've also had some important contributions from our government as well, notably, the Department of Cultural Affairs which oversees the City's Percent for Art program, the Department of Transportation which has several different art programs, and even the MTA's Art for Transit program.
Public art is a wonderful asset for any community. It can transform otherwise dull spaces into exciting places, like the permanent lighting installation on the Hamilton Avenue Bridge control towers. It can spotlight, illustrate and message important local themes, like the "Las Bicicletas" temporary installation around Manhattan and Brooklyn (including sites in our district at the Bartel-Pritchard Square, Atlantic Avenue & Columbia Street, and at Valentino Park & Pier. Or it can introduce an element of fun and whimsy in an otherwise ordinary circumstance, like "Unparallel Way" on our 4th Avenue medians. Our community is blessed in many ways having an abundance of public art and artists, and people who welcome these expressions which enliven and enrich our community. Every October our Gowanus artists feature a self-guided tour of the many gallery spaces within the corridor. And each year this weekend event seems to grow and grow with more artists participating and more patrons, art-lovers and curious on-lookers who have wondered exactly what was going on inside those interesting spaces. This year is no exception. Check out our listing of "Things to Do", and make time to take in some of these treasured amenities in our own backyard. P.S. The Department of Transportation just alerted us to another temporary installation that will be installed on October 14th at the Union Street Bridge over the Gowanus called "Bridge of Flowers" by Scott Sturgill. It will only be up for one month. Here's a rendering to give you some idea of what to expect: Art is everywhere!  Currently, solar is providing 330 MW of power in New York State, with an additional 94 MW of solar approved or near completion. Of the 5 boroughs in New York City, Brooklyn solar has the highest unit cost to generate. Increasing supply can help drive that price down. That's where you come in.
Solarize Brooklyn CB6 is a program to help residents and small businesses 'go solar' and save money. This program will provide education about solar, guidance on the process of installing solar, and group discounts from a competitively selected installer.
Solarize programs use economies of scale so that as more residents and small businesses sign up to go solar, all participants receive a greater discount. Curious about how much solar you could install on your home or business? Visit the NYC Solar Map to find out.

Recycle Your e-Waste
There's a great opportunity to dispose of those old electronic devices in an environmentally responsible manner. Please consider bringing your e-waste to one of the following upcoming events.
Park Slope Civic Council's Fall Civic Sweep, Throw on some old clothes, roll up your sleeves and volunteer for a few hours of community service! Weed and mulch tree pits, remove posters and paint over graffiti, or just help pick up litter. Here's a great chance to spend some quality family time together in service, giving back to the community. Or, just bring your e-waste castaways where they will be collected and refurbished or recycled by the Lower East Side Ecology Center (LESEC).
October 19th, 10am-4pm, Washington Park, 5th Avenue (between 3rd/4th Streets).
Also, the P.S. 29 and Cobble Hill community will be hosting an e-waste collection event run by LESEC as well.
October 26th, 10am-4pm, PS 29, Baltic Street (between Henry/Clinton Streets)
And if neither of these dates are convenient, you can always drop-off your e-waste directly to LESEC's Gowanus e-waste warehouse at 469 President Street (at Nevins Street). The warehouse accepts e-waste: Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, 10am-5pm; Wednesdays, 12pm-7pm; and, Saturdays, 10am-4pm.

Brooklyn Greenway Initiative (BGI), in partnership with South Brooklyn Running Club, presents the Brooklyn Greenway Half, the only half marathon and 5K exclusively on the Brooklyn Waterfront Greenway, located on the historic East River waterfront in Brooklyn.

Look Again, Painting Exhibition by Ella Yang. The show runs from October 23 to November 23. Yang takes great pleasure in traditional methods of oil painting creating canvases depicting Gowanus landscapes. If you're marching, join us for line up on 14th Street between 7th and 8th Avenues starting at 5:30. The parade will conclude at the Old Stone House & Washington Park in JJ Byrne Playground with a community gathering and dancing with the parade bands, ending at 9 pm. Date to be announced - 4:00PM

Friends of Brooklyn Community Board 6, Inc. was established in 2003 to support the work of Brooklyn Community Board 6 in improving the quality of life in the district. Friends seeks to provide planning, advocacy, research and administrative resources to supplement the limited capacities and budget of the Community Board, thus enabling it to properly carry out its City Charter mandated tasks of evaluating the needs of the district and advocating on behalf of its communities.

GOOD & WELFARE Brooklyn Public Library is expanding days and/or hours of service effective October 4, 2014 throughout Brooklyn. In our district that means... * Carroll Gardens branch will now be open Tues mornings; * Park Slope branch will now be open Wednesday evenings; and, * Red Hook branch will be open on Saturdays. (No changes planned for the Pacific branch.) It was announced on their website on September 29th that the Escape Music Festival, which had been previously planned for Pier 9 at our Red Hook Container Terminal on October 11-12, has relocated the venue to Governors Island instead. CHANGE OF DATE! The monthly meeting of the 78th Precinct Community Council for October will be held at 7:30pm on October 21st. Meetings will resume on the usual 4th Tuesday of the month in November. The Taxi & Limousine Commission would like to remind anyone interested in becoming a licensee that TLC driver or vehicle applications can now be submitted online through TLC's License, Application, Renewal and Summons Payments system. New York State Departments of Environmental Conservation and Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation have released their Draft Open Space Conservation Plan, which is now available for review and will be subject to public hearings. The New York City hearing will be on October 22nd. Comments will be received until December 17th. NYCHA residents can apply for jobs to potentially work at developments affected by Hurricane Sandy by calling (718) 289-8100.
