A Ridge Road Run Update:

After all the rain last week, Sunday of the race dawned sunny with the promise of a little warmth. It was a perfect day for a 5k race! The St. George’s by the River team was 75 members strong! All wearing matching tie dyed t-shirts. Every time I looked around there was always tie dye! It was a great day, and a worthy cause. There are more photos down below. A huge thank you to Laura DiPietro and Suellen Sims for all their work in assembling our team! Thanks again to Laura, her husband David, and their daughters Evelyn and Cora for hosting the after-race brunch at their home. And thank you to Cindy Sagosz for manning our table at the starting line. It was great to gather with so many of our parishioners fighting against teen suicide.

It was such a great day that I am not sure results really matter. It was much more important to be together as a community celebrating a race well run and being together. I would hate to tarnish those emotions with a discussion of who beat who. Did Micah win? Did Jeff win? Truly it doesn’t matter! What matters is that this church was a great example of what it means to support our kids and our communities!

Ok, ok….. Micah easily beat me….beat me by at least 15 minutes! Thank you to everyone who supported this effort in anyway. A huge shout out to all of our 75 team members, THANK YOU!!

Could Sponsoring a Refugee Family be for You?

St. George’s-by-the-River is exploring the idea of refugee sponsorship through “Welcome Corps”, a new government-sponsored initiative to encourage Americans to help alleviate the ongoing refugee crisis here and around the world.

All who are interested are invited to an informational meeting immediately following the 10:00am Sunday service on May 21st in the library.

A successful sponsorship would require a minimum of 15 dedicated people willing to commit their time, resources, and knowledge to help resettle a refugee family in Monmouth County. A variety of different skill sets would be ideal - backgrounds in real estate, medicine, social work, finance, mental health, education, English language learning, social work and fund-raising to name a few. For those who don’t have a professional background, a desire to be a mentor and friend to a refugee would be equally valuable.

Part of the responsibility of a sponsor group is to plan for and have in place all necessities for the family before they arrive, to raise funds for their start-up and living expenses for at least the first 90 days, to support them through their first 6-12 months living here, and ultimately transition to independence in their new community.  Being part of a Sponsor Group would require a solid commitment from each volunteer to see a family through to this end goal.

If you’re seeking a way to make an impactful and life-changing difference in the lives of a family who desperately needs it (as well as your own!), this may be your answer. Join us on May 21st to find out more.

Stuff a Truck School supplies for Horizons at the Jersey Shore.

Saturday May 20 from 9:00am-1:00pm

Low-income children in grades K-12 from Red Bank and Neptune have the chance to attend a fun and enriching summer school program at CBA, Rumson Country Day School, and the YMCA. This non-profit, award winning national program needs our help with supplies to get ready for this summer's students.

Pencils, pens, crayons, colored pencils, colored markers, erasers, small sharpeners, and dry erase markers are all needed.

Easy drop off in church driveway. Volunteers of all ages are welcome to help receive donations!   Cindy Sagosz (732)996-0841

The Outreach Committee met this week and issued five new grants on behalf of St. George’s by the River.  The grants are for a wide array or purposes but all focus on two of our areas of focus this year – ongoing food and housing insecurity and the needs of children.

$4,000 to Sisters Academy Asbury Park

Sisters Academy is part of Mercy Center and operates a tuition-free Middle School in Asbury Park.  Their objective is to break the cycle of generational poverty, one child and one family at a time. They serve 56 students and their objective is to ensure that their students are 21stcentury learners.  Many of these students go on to prestigious, academically vigorous high schools and our grant serves to advance their technical literacy with the purchase of two (2) – 3D Printers, the required filaments, teacher training and certification and an on-line curriculum.

$3,500 CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates)

CASA serves as the voice of children in foster care.  Our grant to CASA is unrestricted and is to be used to help fund extraordinary and special expenses for these children.  From the essential like eyeglasses or dental needs to the aspirational like music lessons or sports participation.

$5,000 LUNCH BREAK

Lunch Break needs no introduction to St. George’s.  Their aim is not just to feed people but to educate them on becoming self-sufficient, productive citizens who can lift their entire families in future generations.  In addition Family Promise (which is now part of Lunch Break) has aided 62 homeless families and 124 children who were given housing, training in financial literacy and career coaching. Our grant to Lunch Break is unrestricted and can be used to support their essential work in in our community

$5,000 HABcore

HABcore too is well known to us at St George’s.  They provide housing to homeless veterans, families and individuals with special needs.  Their objective is to move these people from crisis to stability and to give them opportunities to improve and alter the trajectory of their lives.  They have a number of housing projects on the horizon in Asbury Park, Freehold, Oceanport and Red Bank.  HABcore is breaking the cycle of homelessness in innovative and impressive ways.  Our grant will enable them to continue this vital work and help with ever escalating operating expenses particularly the cost of retaining key employees.

$2,500 THE SOURCE AT RED BANK REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL

The Source has operated at Red Bank Regional for more than 20 years.  It is an innovative resource for students and is committed to supporting their mental health, overall well-being and educational success.  Our grant to the SOURCE is unrestricted and will enable the Director to address unfunded or under-funded program and student needs.

As we meet with these agencies, we as a Committee continue to be impressed with the quality of their leadership, the clarity of their vision and the compassion with which they operate.  Their gratitude to us as a congregation is evident.  The Outreach Committee again thanks the Clergy, Vestry and most importantly the Congregation for believing that the mission of the Church extends far beyond our campus. Because of this vision St. George’s is seen as a positive, engaged and generous Christian community.

Below are the things to know about the week ahead for Youth and Family programs, as well as save the date information for upcoming events and activities.

Please read all the way through so you do not miss any opportunities for your family to participate in the St. George's youth ministries we have to offer.

More from Canterbury Fair!

Silent Auction: 4 weeks and counting!

This week we can thank McLoone's for their generous gift card donations. We are hoping to create a basket or two of dine-arounds. New venues may be excited to get out the word with gift cards, and of course “old favorites” are truly favored!

Let’s not forget about gifts for our pets. Certificates for grooming, obedience training, pet sitting or walking are very welcome.

Ideas for donations are limitless. Here are just a few more possibilities

Spin and yoga sessions, photo shoots, car washes, fishing trips and boat cruises.

Looking forward to hearing from you soon!

Gratefully yours,

Annette
