The Skokie Home Scoop - June 2, 2017

Dear Skokie Families,

If you found yourself walking in or around The Skokie School this week, you would have seen a student or two dressed in a toga (our 6th graders) or colonial garb (our 5th graders).  Well before the bell rang to start the day this morning, our front lawn was a flurry of activity with students pitching in to carry out tables and props, setting up our annual 5th grade Colonial Faire.  I have to say, this year's costumes may be among the best that I've seen.  Better yet, we had a high number of parents join us to peruse the faire and visit booths like the Blacksmith, the Apothecary or the Milliner.  Talking to one of our 5th graders, you would have been taken back in time as they shared their Colonial story with you and the role of their job in the community.  Inside, we had numerous 6th graders donning togas as they wrap up their Greek and Roman units.  It's not often that you hear a student shout down the hall to their friend, "Wait up, I need to fix my toga!"

These hands-on, experiential opportunities that we provide our students with the memory-making moments they will carry with them.  It is often moments like these that inspire a child to become a teacher some day, as the experience alone reached a side of them as a learner that they had never before recognized or appreciated.  From the Pioneer Room, to the Colonial Faire to a realistic Civil Re-enactment at Washburne, Winnetka makes history come alive for its students and inspires them to think creatively about their own learning.

Enjoy this final weekend of the school year before summer hits.  As you head into it, take a moment to ask your fifth or sixth grader what some of their favorite memories of the school year have been and why.  We look forward to our final four and a half days together next week, and wish you all a relaxing weekend together with your families.

Most Sincerely,

Kelly Tess

Tech Corner
Minecraft is one of the world's most popular games, but did you know it is also educational?  Students at The Skokie School have used Minecraft for learning in a variety of ways this year.  Some examples include: building a colonial village, building social pyramids and recreating different historical landmarks.  Take a look at the picture below to see a group of 6th graders working on building pyramids after studying Egypt.
Request from the Skokie-Washurne PTO
Please remember to turn in your  2017 Grand  Food Center  Receipts  to support the Skokie-Washburne PTO (so ultimately our schools!) as well as The  Grand , a fabulous local grocery store.  Please drop off your  Grand   receipts  in the colorfully wrapped boxes labeled " Grand   receipts " located in lobby of each school. Your 5th, 6th, 7th or 8th grader can get involved in the process and drop off the  receipts  themselves. The  Grand  generously donates 3% of the pre-tax amount to the PTO on each  receipt collected from their Winnetka or Glencoe stores.

Thank you!
