The Skokie Home Scoop - October 7, 2016

Dear Skokie Families,

There is a chill in the air today that brings with certain smells and traditions that only Fall can bring.  Usually for fans on the north side of Chicago, that doesn't mean baseball.  But this year it does.  No matter your allegiance, you must admit it is a thrilling thing to see an historic underdog break through and edge to victory.  If you're looking for something the whole family can gather around the television for tonight, 8:15 is the magic time to root for the Cubbies!  Baseball and a winning team make for an easy way to get everyone on the couch on a Friday night!

On another note, I am pleased to announce that club registration has opened up for several of our clubs.  The following clubs are now accepting registrants:

ART CLUB
This year, the Skokie School Art Club will be working on a variety of projects, some independent and some collaborative, including the creation of our very own art history walk. We will meet in the Art Room on Wednesdays, from 3:45-4:45 pm.  Our first session will meet on October 26th and our final session will meet on February 1st.  (There will be 12 sessions in all.)  There are 10 available spots for this club, but if interest exceeds the limit - a second day may be added.

PLAY IT NOW MATH CLUB
A new math and logic game club for Skokie 5th graders. Whether your child can't get enough of all things math or wants to build math confidence and skill, this club is the perfect fit! Each week, engaging new games will be introduced that grow perseverance, strategic thinking, and computational fluency. Our club will provide a relaxed environment for building both friendships and mathematical thinking! Club meets 7:30 - 8:25 a.m., October 27 - May 18 (not in session 11/17, 11/24, 12/22, 12/29, 2/9, and 3/30) in the Skokie School Loft.

ROBOTICS TEAM
Join this adventurous crew as we experience the challenges suggested for The First Lego League. We will determine if we are ready to compete or if we want to pilot the experience for next year's competition. The Team will meet on Wednesdays, from 3:30 - 4:30 p.m. November 2 through December 14, 2016, in Room 142.

AFTER SCHOOL SPORTS/CLIMBING CLUB
We are pleased and excited to be offering, for the upcoming 2016-2017 school year, our After School Sports Clubfor fifth and sixth graders, and   Skokie Climbing Club . The Skokie Climbing club is for students who would like to climb the Skokie High Ropes Course after school. 6 - 8th grade students along with 5th grade Adventure Climbers are allowed to enroll during the first semester.

COMING SOON:  Cereal Club, Science Olympiad, and Math Counts (Science Olympiad and Math Counts are November/December through April Clubs)!

From The Health Office

Heads Up!

There are times in the year when we see head lice in the community and among the students, and this year is similar.

Here are a few easy tips to minimize the spread of head lice:
  • Do not share any combs, brushes, hats, caps, wigs, or barrettes/hair ties.
  • Try to avoid head to head contact
  • Wearing your hair back or up can reduce the chance of hair contact with others
  • Do not share Halloween costume elements that would create "head to head" sharing.   Keep this in mind when trying things on in costume shops.
  • Avoid sharing sports helmets, masks, and related equipment.
  • Be watchful following "sleep under" or "sleep over parties" where it is common for a group to gather or sleep in close proximity on couches and floors bringing their heads near to each other.
  • Increasing personal space reduces the chance for head to head contact.

Our district website, www.winnetka36.org, has a wide range of information on current practices on this subject for your reference.
( See the links below.)

CAREER DAY AT SKOKIE:  November 15, 2016

The Skokie School is excited to launch its first ever Career Day on Tuesday, November 15.  We are looking for volunteers to spend time with our students to share information about what they do for a living, and how that chosen career was inspired by a learning experience in school.  If you are interested in sharing your time and experience with us, please CLICK HERE to give us some basic information.  A member from our Career Day Committee will contact you with the details.
From The Kinetic Wellness Department

Hello Skokie Families,

We hope that your year is off to a wonderful start! We have been having fun, and being very active back in the Kinetic Wellness Department so far this year! Just a friendly reminder that as the weather gets chillier we encourage kids to bring extra layers as we will be outside for KW as much as possible! Students can bring sweatpants, sweatshirts, hats, gloves etc. These items should be left in KW lockers during the week and taken home on Friday's to be cleaned along with their KW uniforms!

If you have any questions please feel free to contact us!

Sincerely,

The Skokie KW Department

FROM THE SKOKIE/WASHBURNE PTO

Please remember to bring in your Grand Food Center receipts that you saved over the summer. Collecting Grand receipts is an easy and no-cost way for you to support the Skokie-Washburne PTO (so ultimately our schools!) and also support The Grand, a fabulous local grocery store.  It's simple, too.  Just collect and drop off your Grand receipts in the colorfully wrapped boxes labeled "Grand receipts" located in Washburne's office and Skokie's lobby.  In fact, your 5th, 6th, 7th, or 8th grader can easily get involved in the process and drop off the receipts themselves.  The Grand generously donates 3% of the pre-tax amount to the PTO on each receipt collected from their Winnetka or Glencoe stores.

"SKOKIE SHUFFLE" ANNUAL 5K

This year, Skokie will be hosting its third annual 5K, The Skokie Shuffle.  We've moved it up from the Spring and into the Fall!  Click on the link below to register.  We welcome all walkers and runners for a fun event, and a great way to come together as a school community!
