The Slow Growth of Sinners Being Declared Saints

I have a small plant that was given to me when I moved into my first post-seminary home.  When Sarah and I moved to NYC, it sat in my office looking out on West 69th street.  In our house in Westchester, it lived on the third floor with a clear view of the sky.  In each setting I would turn it or tie it with string to see how I could shape it.  It now sits on our back porch and as I looked at it the other day I realized that I could see in the way it is shaped the different periods of ways I had tried to form it.  It is a small plant, but it has a lot of character.

The way we come to know Jesus is a lifelong process of being turned and shaped.  It is a slow process of being moved along in the process of our life.  God gives us what we need.  He places us where we need to be.  Over time, there are subtle ways in which we have been influenced by the ongoing care of His love and grace.  While tying the string on my little plant to shape it is an immediate and even somewhat drastic step, it is only through slowly growing into that new shape that it becomes permanent.

When I meet with folks who are new to the Episcopal church, like many of those who joined our church this past Sunday, I often describe our worship as a slow deepening formation.  It is through showing up week after week to hear the Good News of our forgiveness and receiving the grace of God in the sacraments that we are slowly shaped and grown.  We come to know our forgiveness and the freedom of our life in Jesus in a way that over time shapes the way we see ourselves, our friends and neighbors, and those who look or seem nothing like us.  I pray that as you think about who you are today, you may see some subtle formation that reflects the gift of God's grace in your life.

See you in Church,

Carrie Willard

February 10, 17, 24
with Carrie Willard

Carrie Willard is returning to Holy Spirit to explore grace in family life during our Adult Education Series in February.

February 10 - Carrie will talk about discovering interesting and sometimes unsavory family history, and what that means for her faith life now. She will also talk about family names and other ways that we name children.
February 17 - Carrie will discuss conflict in families and how our Christian call to reconciliation can look complicated in family life.
February 24 - In Carrie's final week she will share her thoughts on motherhood, and how being a mother has changed her faith.

Carrie has been bringing small, and then large, children to church since 2008. She is the wife, daughter, sister, and sister-in-law of Episcopal priests, and her husband, Neil, is the rector at Palmer Memorial here in Houston.

She works in administration at Rice University, and she also is a blogger at curessa.wordpress.com, where she writes about food and entertaining, life in a clergy family, and her views on faith. Her writing has been featured on Episcopal Cafe.

Childcare extended during the Adult Sunday School hour.
