“There is much yet to do.”
The month of April was the 50th anniversary of the Fair Housing Act (FHA) . Five decades ago, during the civil rights era, President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the piece of legislation that prohibits discrimination in the sale, rental, and financing of housing based on race, color, national origin, religion, sex (gender), familial status, and disability.

Angela Murray, Executive Director of The Sophia Way, highlights the limited impact of the Act and the disparities that continue to exist.

Karina O'Malley Honored
A decade ago, Karina O’Malley recognized the growing number of homeless women living in East King County, and starting working to assist them as one of the founders of The Sophia Way. Karina continues to be a tireless advocate for the homeless and Metropolitan King County Council Vice Chair Claudia Balducci recognized her work by presenting her with the Martin Luther King, Jr. Medal of Distinguished Service.

Thank You!
"The time is always right to do what is right."

You made it happen! You helped us raise $48,300 through our #GiveBIG Campaign. The amount includes a matching donation of $10,000 given generously by The Hayes Family Fund. This has been our best GiveBIG ever!

We are hugely grateful to our community of supporters who help us drive our mission to get women experiencing homelessness, off the streets and into safe, affordable housing. We are committed to helping women get back on their feet with both dignity and respect.

Your donation will ensure every woman on the Eastside will have a place to call HOME. Every time they celebrate a new milestone, please know that you are an important part of it.

Housing First in the Emergency Shelter
It’s 3 a.m., and I've just finished my third call from the Mobile Crisis Team. They have another woman who needs shelter. We are eight days from closure (shelter closes on May 15), and things are not slowing down. The need is too great.

Cynthia Brown, Director of Emergency Services shares the challenges faced and the successes at the emergency shelter.

Partnering With Bag It Forward
We are so happy to have The Sophia Way as our “Bag It Forward” partner representing our hunger focus. Our generous customers have donated $444.93 in the last three months. That’s a lot of nickels!

New Seasons Market employees vote every six months on a new hunger partner to support. The New Seasons customer has the opportunity to keep or donate the nickel to either a hunger partner, environment partner or educational partner.

The Sophia Way is a wonderful partner, and we couldn’t be more pleased with the response from our customers. Thank you to all the wonderful staff at The Sophia Way for all that you do.

The Need for Affordable Housing in Our Community

Please join us on Thursday, May 17 at 6 p.m. for "The Difference a Home Makes: A dialogue about homelessness and housing on the Eastside."

Hear about the urgent need for more diverse and accessible housing options in our Eastside communities first-hand from clients and staff of five Eastside agencies -- The Sophia Way, Attain Housing, Congregations for the Homeless, Imagine Housing, and Lifewire -- that provide services for our neighbors experiencing homelessness. Be a part of the conversation about the future of housing on the Eastside and enjoy a light dinner after.

Already fairly knowledgeable about housing and homelessness issues? Bring a friend or family member who's new to the conversation! Our goal is to get the whole community talking about this affordability crisis that affects us all so that together, we can find a solution that works for us all! Please register here
