ICYMI - NJASA Legal Research Publication Program

In response to concerns about “book bans,” the Legislature passed the Freedom to Read Act on October 28, 2024, and Governor Phil Murphy signed it into law on December 9, 2024. In connection with the Governor’s signing of this new law, NJASA’s Executive Director, Dr. Richard Bozza was quoted as saying, “The Freedom to Read Act is a crucial piece of legislation that safeguards the fundamental right of all New Jersey residents to access diverse and inclusive materials in public and school libraries. This act protects intellectual freedom by prohibiting censorship and ensuring the library materials are not removed based on personal opinions or beliefs.” This Administrative Guide discusses the Freedom to Read Act and provides guidance to school officials.
