Major South Park Developments Break Ground Groundbreaking

Mayor Garcetti, Chinese Dignitaries, Councilmember Huizar, and the South Park BID Welcome Projects

OCEANWIDE PLAZA by OCEANWIDE

In the past few weeks, we have celebrated some exciting ground breakings in South Park.  Beijing-based Oceanwide held a groundbreaking ceremony for development project Oceanwide Plaza, previously known as Fig Central.  The event was emceed by our very own Executive Director Jessica Lall.

The ceremony marks a turning point after nearly a decade of development iterations for Fig Central, a project just east of Staples Center. Fig Central will feature one 49-story tower and two 40-story towers, all sitting on top of a 100-foot-tall podium. The podium will have 1,444 parking stalls and an open-air galleria with more than 166,000 square feet of retail space. The project will be built in a single phase and is scheduled for completion by 2018.

TEN50 by TRUMARK URBAN

Along with Oceanwide, San Francisco-based Trumark Urban held a March groundbreaking for their latest project, a 22-story condo tower named Ten50. Ten50 will include a variety of floor plans including one and two bedroom layouts, as well as larger penthouse units; some even two-level penthouse residences commanding beautiful city views. Residents will also have access to a multitude of amenities, both indoor and outdoor. According to downtown blogger Brigham Yen, Ten50 will also host "one of the country's first drone landing pad (if not the first in a residential high-rise) on the 6th floor amenity deck that will be able to accept packages from Amazon's future drone delivery service". Ten50 is slated for completion in late 2016 and will come with 5,000 square feet of retail that will wrap around the base of the tower.

It was an honor for the South Park BID to take part in both groundbreakings. We wish both a very warm welcome to the neighborhood, and thank both Trumark Urban and Oceanwide for their dedication to the South Park neighborhood and commitment to the BID.

Street Art Collection on Google Shows South Park to the World

March 17 was more than St. Patrick's Day this year  it was also the official launch of Google Art Project's new Street Art Collection.  Utilizing their existing geolocation abilities, a team at Google has created a site where murals and other forms of public art can be pin-pointed on a map, and seen around the world.  This project is part of the larger Google Cultural Institute, launched in 2011.

Thanks to our partner the Do Art Foundation, South Park now has 4 large-scale murals, with many more on the way.  Now, people from all over can not only see the beauty of these works by amazing artists,  b ut can associate them with Downtown Los Angeles and the South Park Community.

Take a glance at South Park's murals on Google Street Art by these great artists:

If you snap a pic of them while out in the community, be sure to tag them #SPDoesArt!

SPBID Convenes Meeting with City Departments and Metro

The Pico Metro Station is an important asset to the South Park community, and a gateway to DTLA from the south and west.  It serves two Metro train lines and a thriving community, as well as many large-scale entertainment venues.  We've heard from many residents, developers, business owners, and students about the changes they would like to see made there, and want to see how those ideas can influences to future of the station.

Due to local  interest  and concern, SPBID met last week with Metro, Mayor Garcetti's Office, and our local Council Districts 9 and 14 to discuss the future of the station.  Those in attendance discussed the importance of the station to South Park, as well as the greater LA area.  The BID presented ideas on how to enhance the station, and provided context for the surrounding community and its growth.  The group also discussed current plans for the station.  We'd like to thank our local government agencies for coming together to discuss a topic to important to our community, and look forward to convening again soon.

SPBID Talks Construction with Project Managers Construction

Multiple Local Development Projects Spurs Meeting

Recently, the South Park BID convened a meeting with project managers from many of the local construction projects, including 1200 Fig, Oceanwide Plaza, Ten50, G12, The Desmond, and MyFigueroa.  The purpose of the meeting was to aggregate all construction plans and contact info for projects, share ideas on how to mitigate impacts to nearby residents and businesses, and coordinate (where possible) our clean and safe teams, with a goal to put together maps and information of good walking routes and construction zones as they change throughout the coming months.

Every development project will have a hotline that residents and local employees can call in order to discuss issues with the site curing construction.  If you have any questions about development in the area, please let us know!  We will soon be posting a list of all local construction hotline online and in our front window.

Downtown LA BIDs Meet with LAPD Leadership LAPD

BIDs and Their Safety Teams Connect with Law Enforcement

Last week, DTLA area BIDs got together with local LAPD Chief and Commanders to discuss various issues the downtown community is dealing with, including homelessness, increase in graffiti, and working together towards a safer downtown.

The meeting was attended by many BID representatives, and is reflective of the great relationship these two very different kinds of organizations continue to share.  As a follow up to this meeting, we will be organizing tour of South Park with LAPD and BID staff and Board members soon.

Resident Dawn Davis Shares Her SP Love Dawn

Local Actress & Activist on Why South Park is the Place to Be

South Park is an exciting place to be right now.  The influx of development, business interest, transit connections and more are putting the neighborhood on the map like never before.  However, not many people are aware of what it might be like to live here.

Local resident, actress, and activist, Dawn Davis, shares her side of the South Park story in a piece recently written for the Downtown News.  Dawn jumped right into local life as soon as she moved in.  AS she's tells it, " Jessica, Amanda and Jessica at the BID welcomed me as an active resident, and when they discovered I'd been volunteering for Operation Healthy Streets in Skid Row, they asked if I'd be willing to do outreach with our homeless neighbors in South Park."

Take a look, experience the community and its future through one member's eyes.  As Dawn says, with all thats coming online, "t hings are going to get crazy good."

Runners Raise Over $150,000 for California Hospital Medical Center

Thanks to the local South Park community and all of DTLA for your support of the annual Heart of the City 5k!  The race raised $150,000 for California Hospital Medical Center, where it will be used for the hospital's vital ER and cardiology equipment, and has nearly doubled the amount of participants each year.  For the past 127 years, CHMC has provided quality care to residents, businesses, visitors and neighbors in need.  If you work, live or hang out in DTLA, this is YOUR hospital.

SPBID is proud to be involved in the event, where we serve on the committee, and help get extra volunteers to clean the area before and after the event.

Want to get involved in next year's race?  The committee is always looking for new members to make this amazing event happen.   Check out heartofthecity5k.org,  CHMC's   Facebook page , or call (213) 748-5866 for more information.

Coro Fellow LADOT Transportation Study Needs Your Input

The South Park BID is excited to support Coro Fellows and LADOT in demystifying the feeling people have towards bikes and sharing the road in Los Angeles. Love them, hate them? Let them know!

Take their quick survey, which will provide some fantastic insights for their research and inform future biking policy in the city. The Fellows are looking to reach as wide an audience as possible - so whether you ride a bike, drive a car, walk, use transit, skateboard or scooter, they could use your help. The survey takes about 10 minutes, and respondents can choose to be entered in a raffle for a chance to win prizes. Whatever your opinion is, survey now or forever hold your peace.
MyFigueroa Streetscaping on Track for 2016 MyFig

A New Timeline is Announced for Improvements to Figueroa & 11th St.

The MyFigueroa streetscaping project has a new timeline - construction will likely start in December 2015 or January 2016.  The project was initiated by a coalition of local entities over 5 years ago, and was initially housed in the now defunct CRA.  Moving forward through its new home at LADOT, the project will include protected bike lanes, pedestrian level lighting, wayfinding signage, and new, separated bus platforms.  While construction was originally going to begin in 2015, we're excited to see that the project is still moving forward and will enhance the South Park area in the coming year.  Street lighting updates are already underway.  As the funding must be used by the end of 2016, the buildout will be completed relatively quickly.  More updates on the MyFigueroa project to come soon!
