Over 100 Guests Joined For Ribbon-Cutting Ceremony
 
 
A ribbon-cutting ceremony and press conference was held to celebrate the installation of the Hope St Parklet on January 14, 2016. The Hope St Parklet is the first to be approved and built through the People St. Program, an LADOT program focused on transforming LA's city streets into active, accessible spaces for people. Thank you to the over 100 guests who joined us for the occasion.

Nearly 2 Tons of Trash Already Cleared
 
 
Clean and safe services have commenced in South Park II, bounded roughly by Olympic Blvd, the alley between Main/Broadway, the 10 freeway, and Margo (alley between Grand/Olive). In an effort to clean SPII in the most efficient manner possible and to prepare the area for the El Niño storm season, the initial services focus heavily on trash and debris removal, and detailing curb lines and storm drains.

Thus far, the SPII Clean Team has collected 1.7 tons of trash. To view weekly service updates, click here.

Anti-Graffiti Project Engages and Beautifies Community

 

As a next step in the Public Art Strategic Plan, the South Park BID and the Do Art Foundation worked with Metro Charter Elementary School students in December to paint pieces of plywood for a new construction fence art project in South Park. The construction fence artwork, curated by local and renowned artist, Shrine (Brent Spears), is testing new, innovative graffiti-proof ideas. The project has recently made its debut at the corner of Hope St. and Pico Blvd.
 
With a new focus on art that engages the South Park community, the BID and the Do Art Foundation are o rganizing a series of exciting projects for 2016.

South Park BID Has Moved Move
BID Staff, Clean & Safe Teams Relocating North Up Hope St.
 

The South Park BID office has moved up Hope Street to 1100 S. Flower St. The move will bring the staff and Clean and Safety Ambassadors closer to the heart of the neighborhood. January 26 - 28, 2016

Join us for the 2016 Homeless Count - January 26-28, 2016 - and help improve the lives of homeless men, women and children across Los Angeles in need of our support. 

The goal is to count more than 95% of our census tracts and to complete a minimum of 4,500 demographic surveys. This will produce better demographic profiles, as well as allow Los Angeles to target those in vehicles, campers, tents and encampments. An accurate head count will help ensure proper estimates in obtaining resources for those in need.

Oceanwide Plaza: Street Closure Notice Oceanwide
Concrete Pours Require Weekend Closures

 

Weekend closures scheduled for:
March 11-12
March 18-19
March 25-26
April 1-2

Oceanwide Plaza, currently under construction at 1101 S. Flower St., will be conducting a series of large-scale concrete pours at its project development site. The work will be performed on W. 11th St., W. Flower St. and Figueroa St. Concrete trucks and pumps will be utilized to complete the work.

A total of 27,000 cubic yards of concrete will be poured. This project will require a total of four consecutive weekends to complete. Work will be carried out within a 24-hour period each weekend from 11:00 pm Friday to 11:00pm Saturday. Each pour is scheduled to take place on the following planned dates: March 11-12, March 18-19, March 25-26, April 1-2.

The Vaseline Healing Project With Viola Davis Viola
Actress Visits Eisner Pediatric & Family Medical Center


 

Emmy-winning actress, Viola Davis , in partnership with  The Vaseline Healing Project and top NGO,  Direct Relief, worked with volunteers to pack Relief Kits for those in need living in LA. Kits containing soap, hairbrushes, tooth brushes and vaseline were donated to Eisner patients.

BID Continues Involvement In Homelessness
 


On January 13, 2016, both the City and County hosted events relating to the issue of homelessness. 

1/13/16 City Meeting on Homelessness
The City's Homelessness and Poverty Committee meeting discussed the recently-released Homelessness Strategy Report.

-Adopting a "No Wrong Door" approach to improve the City's interactions with homeless people. From police officers to librarians, City employees will be empowered with the tools, relationships, and resources necessary to connect people in need to services and housing.
-Establishing a focused homelessness governance infrastructure in the City so that there is institutional knowledge and accountability. This includes establishing a Homelessness Czar/Coordinator;
Continuing to expand, improve and use the Coordinated Entry System as a core process that matches homeless people with vital resources;
Embracing the "Housing First" approach
-Using City funds to leverage Federal, State, and County dollars to fill unfunded gaps
-Making more housing available at all income levels
-Working closely with LAHSA for expert guidance and support
-Ensuring that services and housing are provided in all L.A. communities

1/13/16 County Meeting on Homelessness
The County's meeting surrounded the recent report, Recommended Strategies to Combat Homelessness, after 4 months of policy summit brainstorm sessions. 


In the County report, roughly 12 of the recommendations marked as 'priority', or identified as items that could be accomplished by June 30, 2016. Public comment is welcome via mail and email until January 21.

On Wednesday, January 16, the District Identity and Marketing Committee (DISI) convened for their bi-monthly public meeting. Agenda items included:

-2015 social media analytics and goals for 2016
-2015 website analytics and web goals for 2016
-The continuation of the  Public Art Strategic Plan in 2016

The South Park BID District Identity & Marketing Committee (DISI) is a Board sub-committee open to the public that provides guidance to the full Board of Directors on the strategic communications and marketing efforts to promote the South Park BID.

Parklet Opening Accompanied CoCo Fresh Green Carpet
 


On Thursday, January 14, 2016, community members convened for January's Green Carpet event featuring  Coco Fresh. Guests enjoyed buy one, get one boba and milk tea specials, and had the opportunity to sample new milk tea flavor flights. Having just introduced the Hope St Parklet to the community that morning, guests were able to enjoy their beverages on the new community parklet. Thank you to all who joined us!

SPBID Exec. Director Moderates Discussion on Development
 


On Tuesday, January 19, South Park BID Executive Director Jessica Lall moderated  a panel that discussed Oceanwide Plaza, the upcoming mega mixed use development project near Staples Center, at Biznow's Los Angeles State of the Market event held at the JW Marriott in South Park.

Project architects from RTKL detailed the design and special amenities of the project, while retail brokers from Kennedy Wilson shared the leasing strategy of attracting "approachable luxury" stores that cater to both residents and visitors and explained why they think Oceanwide Plaza will be a top retail destination for Downtown Los Angeles. The panel also included a new fly-through video that gave a virtual tour of the project's pedestrian friendly retail space.

Maintenance Crews Keep South Park Clean 


 

Starting in 2015, South Park's Clean Team focuses on a monthly special project in order to increase the overall cleanliness of the neighborhood.

 

This month, the Clean Team focused on detailing walls.

 

Earlier this year, the Clean Team steam washed select locations in the district, pressure-washed every trash can in the district, removed weeds from all local tree wells, removed graffiti, touched up walls with paint, and cleaned the utility boxes and alleys.

 

Stay tuned for information on special projects from the South Park BID Clean Team in the coming months.
