Double-Portrait of Special Olympics Ambassadors Located in South Park


Kent Twitchell recently completed a mural in South Park to commemorate the 2015 Special Olympics Summer Games, which kicks-off at the L.A. Memorial Coliseum on July 25. Twitchell's "Special Olympics Monument" is a double-portrait of Special Olympics ambassadors Rafer Johnson and Loretta Claiborne. Johnson, an Olympic gold medalist, is a founder of Special Olympics Southern California. Claiborne is a former Special Olympics Athlete.


Many thanks to Branded Arts and the Mural Conservancy of Los Angeles for bringing these murals to the district. The mural is located at 1147 S. Hope St. and accompanies another mural in the district of Muhammed Ali by artist CRYPTK. Twitchell's mural is the 7th completed in the district in the past year.

Pico Station Closed for Renovations This Weekend Pico

Free Shuttle Will Be Available Instead


Weekend Pico Station Closures:
Friday, August 17, 9:00pm -
Monday, August 20, 5:00am

The Metro Blue and Expo Line Pico Station, the leading public transit hub in South Park, will be closed this weekend for renovations. The closure is part of a $1.2 million development project to make the station safer and more user-friendly. The South Park BID has been working proactively with LA Metro, LA Mayor, and LA City Council to make the Pico Station improvements a reality. Renovations include:
  • New, expanded station canopy 
  • Improved lighting
  • Tile replacement
  • Fresh paint 
  • Camera and video enhancements
During the closures, a free bus shuttle will be available between 7th/Metro - Red Line Station to Grand Station/LATTC or Expo 23rd/LATTC station. Shuttle stops will also be made at Pico Station to pick up and drop off riders.

SPBID Participating in Meetings


The Figueroa Corridor Streetscape project ( MyFigueroa) is redesigning the Figueroa Corridor and 11th street into a complete, multimodal street that better serves the needs of pedestrians, bicyclists, and transit riders, while still accommodating drivers. 

The Department of City Planning (DCP) convened a group of corridor stakeholders to help advise DCP and the Los Angeles Department of Transportation (LADOT) on communicating the changes along Figueroa St. related to MyFigueroa Streetscape Project. The meeting was held at the South Park BID on June 24.

Speedplay Block Party: July 19 Speedplay

Free Class and Drink Specials for South Park Residents


Your new neighbor, Speedplay, is hosting a free class for South Park residents on Sunday, July 19 at 10:30am! Speedplay is a high-intensity interval training class combining Woodway Curve Treadmills, Concept 2 Rowers, and free weights for a 60-minute full body workout. Splash of LA: August 8 Splash

How You Can Support Youth Leadership and Development



On August 8, 2015, Kid City Hope Place will host its fifth annual "Splash of LA," a family festival and fundraiser  held in the heart of downtown at 1010 South Flower Street, in the parking lot on the corner of Flower and  Olympic.  This festival, organized entirely by Kid City students, features freshly made tacos and pupusas, live entertainment,  games and activities for all ages, including a dunk tank and a bouncy house.

All proceeds benefit Kid City, a youth leadership and development, college access and completion, and arts and music program for first generation low-income youth in downtown Los Angeles. This fall, Kid City will have over 140 kids enrolled in college, including Yale, UCLA, UC Berkeley, UC Santa Cruz, UC Santa Barbara, UC Riverside, Elizabethtown College and local community colleges! Key Guests Present on Elongating the Development Cycle

Ray Chan, General Manager of the Los Angeles Department of Building and Safety, made a special presentation at the South Park Board of Directors Meeting on June 25, 2015. Fire Chief John Vidovich joined the lively presentation on the phone. Both Vidovich and Chan discussed changes they are making at the City and their vision for developers, such as elongating the development cycle in Los Angeles, moving forward.

LADOT Transit Services Bureau has begun a new Transit Service Analysis entitled  "Moving Forward... Together" to improve service around the city.   The South Park BID is thrilled that LADOT is reevaluating their bus lines, and looks forward to bus services with the new growth of Downtown LA in mind. LIVE on August 7-9 at the 7th annual Nike Basketball 3ON3 Tournament presented by NBC4 Southern California. With over 1,500 teams, 5,000 players and 40,000 spectators, California's largest 3 on 3 basketball tournament is home to all every kind of "baller" there is: short, tall, college standout, recreational league champion, intramural player, gym rat, AAU or YMCA participant. Nike Basketball 3ON3 Tournament is double-elimination style, with teams guaranteed to play at least 3 games. California Hospital Participates in Great Kindness Challenge


Dignity Health California Hospital Medical Center in Downtown Los Angeles recently participated in the Great Kindness Challenge as part of initiative at all 39 Dignity Health hospitals in California, Nevada and Arizona and beyond. From surprising patients with a flower, to delivering lunch to a co-worker, California Hospital's involvement in the program is just one of the many ways the organization demonstrates its dedication to humankindness and encourages others to do so as well.

The Great Kindness Challenge, created by non-profit Kids for Peace, is a bullying prevention program dedicated to creating a culture of kindness in elementary, middle, and high schools nationwide. Metro Charter School, which is located on the California Hospital campus, joined California Hospital and participated in the program as well.

Overall, the Great Kindness Challenge had more than two million students enrolled for 2015, which amounted to 100 million acts of kindness in schools nationwide.

It is the time of year to nominate individuals to the South Park Stakeholders Group Board of Directors! It is the right of all property owners (and ONLY property owners and their representatives) to nominate either themselves or their designee to fill one of the positions currently available on the Board. Property owners must be current with assessment payments as well. All property owners should be receiving a notification postcard at the end of July; nominations will be also be publicized on our newsletters and social media at that time. More information to come.

SP Clean Team's Monthly Focus CleanTeam

Maintenance Crews Perform Extra Work to Make Our District Shine


Starting in 2015, SP's Clean Team focuses on a monthly special project in order to increase the overall cleanliness of the neighborhood.


This month, the Clean Team will be detailing all the alleys in the district: removing all weeds, graffiti, and trash.


Earlier this year, the Clean Team pressure washed every trash can in the district, removed weeds from all local tree wells, touched up walls with paint, and cleaned dirty utility boxes.

The South Park BID is thrilled to welcome Laura Hill to the team as our new Communications and Policy Manager. Laura will be spearheading the branding, marketing, and stakeholder communication efforts--as well as policy initiatives--of the South Park BID.


Laura previously served as the Deputy Director for the Jesse M. Unruh Institute of Politics at the University of Southern California where she managed political programming and student-body civic engagement. Her work at USC with various community partners in Downtown Los Angeles sparked her interest in local politics, policy and economic development. Laura's dream is to help make effective, positive change in the city of Los Angeles, and she is very excited to begin realizing that goal with the South Park BID.


Laura is originally from St. Louis, MO and has been a Los Angeles resident for over 4 years. She hopes to bring her Midwestern spirit to the hustle of Downtown LA.

Triple 8 will join Wokcano, Spear Steak and Seafood, The Bunker Hill Bar & Grill, and 3rd Generation Ramen & Sake Bar as the latest addition to its growing downtown restaurant portfolio.
