SPBID Works with Property Owners to Bring in New Tenants

Attention property owners, property managers, and local business owners!
South Park BID is a launching a program to help activate storefronts and our streets, fill empty space, get property owners tenets, and promote local businesses with long and short term tenants, pop ups, public art, and more! This is a great opportunity to get a business off the ground, or show off a property that is currently underutilized.
If you or anyone you know has a vacant space, a small business looking to get started, a company looking for a second location, or any questions, contact Jessica Mandelbaum at jmandelbaum@southpark.la
New Restaurant Already Making WavesTomsUrban

Tom's Urban Opens its 2nd Location at L.A. LIVE

With its first concept starting in Denver, new L.A. LIVE restaurant Tom's Urban is already making a splash with its second location.  The eatery opened for business a few weeks ago, and just had its formal Grand Opening in March.

In taking the space previously used by ESPN Zone, Tom's Urban has a more open feeling, with entrances off Figueroa and in L.A. LIVE and large windows facing South and East.  While ESPN's restaurant is no longer there, the company has retained office space in the building.

It's a place for all meals and occasions, opening at 6:30 AM for breakfast, and staying open late after concerts and events.  With a variety of seating types, from the large central bar to semi-private rooms to an elevated view of the plaza below, its a cool spot for all types of gatherings.

The menu features globally inspired, locally sourced, and seasonally influenced food designed for sharing.  Highlights include street tacos, make-your-own-omelet, and special tables with their own beer taps built in.  Check out the menu here.

Tom's Urban has already been filling up on game night!  Click on tomsurban.com for more info and to make a reservation.

SPBID Meets with City on Street Vending IssuesVending

Potential Legalization Leads to Questions of Enforcement

South Park BID staff has been integrally involved with discussions with the City of Los Angeles regarding street vending, the related Council motion, and whether or not it should be legalized.
While legal in many other major cities, Los Angeles prohibits street vending in the public right of way.  There are approximately 10,000 street vendors currently operating in the informal economy as of now, and many see the legalization of it as a way to create jobs and increase access to local and freshly prepared food.
SP BID, like many similar organizations in LA, loves to see the street activated and jobs created, but has concerns with the capacity of enforcement if street vending is formally legalized.  Additionally, there are issues with the mess that can be left behind when some vendors don't clean up after themselves.  Certain vendors in South Park are known for dumping leftover wares in and around buildings, which can lead to pest infestations and incredible smells.  Business owners, who have to pay a number of taxes, are concerned that street vendors are taking away business without having to incur parallel costs.
SP BID staff have joined a working group to ensure fairness for all parties involved as the process moves forward.
Streetcar Enters FTA Project DevelopmentStreetcar

Federal Program to Help LA Get $75 Million in Grants

A huge milestone has been reached in the process of getting the streetcar back in DTLA!  The LA Streetcar program was accepted in the Federal Transit Administration's Small Starts Program, which means LA Streetcar partners will be working with the FTA to develop the project toward consideration of a $75 million federal grant request.

Over 30 streetcar projects are under consideration or in development in the USA. Previously, only two streetcar projects had been advanced into the FTA's Small Starts Project Development, Tempe and Ft. Lauderdale in 2013. Los Angeles, San Antonio and Charlotte now join the program.  This week, Councilman Huizar, LADOT, LA Streetcar, Inc., and the Bringing Back Broadway all headed to Washington D.C. to further the progress of these related initiatives on the federal level.
Bringing the streetcar back to DTLA will increase mobility within the downtown neighborhoods, and add another layer to an already increasing public transit system.  Unlike bus and Metro rail, the streetcar is more of a "pedestrian catalyst", getting people to places they may have considered walking faster and more efficiently.  In making it easier to get around downtown once you've gotten here, we're hoping the streetcar will increase economic and pedestrian activity throughout downtown.
