SPBID Reduces Graffiti by 96% With Art Project DeterGrafitti
Local Charter School Students Help Enhance Public Realm

To view the South Park BID construction fence project press release, click here.

In response to unruly construction fence graffiti across the 16 active construction sites in the district, the South Park Business Improvement District (BID) developed and implemented a resoundingly successful construction fence art project, reducing graffiti by 96% on a test site

Experimenting with one of the most vandalized construction fences in South Park, the BID worked with developers, construction companies, and students from the local Metro Charter Elementary School to create a replicable project for other sites. The Onyx development site used to be tagged an average of 5 times per week on its 500 feet of fencing. Today, the Onyx construction fence experienced only two tags in nine weeks.

The South Park BID invested $10,000 to design, build, and install the project, approximately half of the amount of what proactive developers spend each year on graffiti removal.

See the fence for yourself at W Pico Ave and S Hope St, and make sure to tag #SPDoesArt in your photos!

Welcome, Captain Howard Leslie! Captains
Thank You For Your Service, Captain Oreb

Thank You, Captain Oreb

Captain Michael Oreb has served the LAPD Central Patrol Division since 2012. Under the first year of his leadership, Central saw violent crime fall by 21.6%, while all Part 1 crimes (the most serious infractions) dropped by 14.5%. A San Pedro native, Captain Oreb will be returning to the Harbor Area as the commander of LAPD's Harbor Division station. The South Park BID would like to thank Captain Oreb for his dedication and service, as we wish him the best in his new position.

Welcome, Captain Leslie

Captain Howard Leslie will take Captain Oreb's place in the Central Division. Captain Leslie has served the Wilshire Division as the division's patrol captain since 2013, and as the division's commanding officer since 2014. The Wilshire Division had the second lowest increase in overall crime in 2015 in all of LAPD.

The South Park BID had the pleasure of meeting Captain Leslie, as well as recently appointed LAPD homeless czar, Todd Chamberlain.

It is with great excitement that the South Park BID welcomes Captain Leslie to the neighborhood!

Learn About The Latest SPBID Streetscape Pilot Project

" The Spot @ Hope St" is a proposed pilot project that would temporarily repurpose lanes on Hope St. between 11th and 12th St. into a community gathering space. The pilot has received significant support from stakeholders and a favorable editorial from the Downtown News as respondents have highlighted the need for more green space in the neighborhood. Community members have also brought up some concerns that are currently being worked through.

The Spot @ Hope St is on track to open April 11 for 8 weeks. Input is currently being sought for what type of programming the community would like in the space. If you have any programming suggestions or your organization would like to provide programming for The Spot, please let us know by visiting The Spot @ Hope St project page so that we can take your thoughts into consideration as we move forward with this project.

EVENT & MEETING RECAPS
Recap: 3/15 Urban Design Meeting Triple8
Planning For The South Park Green Alleys Project

A South Park Urban Design Task Force meeting was held on March 15th, where the BID discussed upcoming projects with representatives from the city, developers, planners and other stakeholders. The meeting included discussion of a pilot green alley project that the BID is working on with the city as part of the DTLA Forward initiative.  Building off a report on South Park green alleys completed in 2014, the BID is in the process of selecting an existing alley in South Park that can be transformed into a green, pedestrian friendly alley.  The goal is to create a process of how other alleys can be transformed through public-private partnerships in the future.

SPBID Efforts Continue To Support Los Angeles Streetcar Project

The SPBID attended the Los Angeles Streetcar Board meeting on March 16th and sent a letter to the Mayor's office in support of including $200 million for the streetcar in the draft Measure R2 ballot initiative funding plan. With that amount, the streetcar would be able to start final design almost immediately, and potentially bypass the federal process altogether. Thanks to the efforts of the SPBID and other stakeholders, the streetcar funding ended up being included in the draft funding plan that was subsequently released on March 18th.  It should be noted, however, that the streetcar is still very low on the funding timeline, so further effort will be needed to get the streetcar moved up the priority list.

SPBID Testifies on 56.11 at Homelessness & Poverty Mtg

On March 17, South Park BID testified on behalf of article 56.11 as amended by the Public Works and Gang Reduction Committee.
This slight amendment will encourage voluntary compliance with daily tent deconstruction. Homeless individuals must know they have to take their tents down daily between 9AM and 6PM or face a violation.

The South Park BID receives complaints daily about tents and other items left by homeless individuals blocking the public right of way.  The BID will continue to fight to promote healthy and clean communities for all who live, work or visit.

Your neighborhood coffee shop at the corner of 11th St and Grand Ave is not your average Starbucks. The manager works hard to ensure that customers feel "at home" and comfortable in their community Starbucks. Friendly baristas do their best to remember your name and ensure you have the highest quality service. With a dog-friendly patio, this corner Starbucks is a great place for a morning cup of joe, afternoon lunch, or a friendly "hello" from the manager and her staff.
