The Students
At Erie Day School, learning is not confined to classrooms or textbooks—it comes alive in the laughter shared between friends, the hands raised with new ideas, and the courage students show when trying something brand new.
This winter, that spirit of exploration and self-expression has been especially vibrant as students wrapped up auditions for this year’s EDS Playhouse production, Matilda Jr. Casting decisions were finalized just before winter break, and when students return in January, rehearsals will officially begin. But the story of our students this season is much bigger than a single show.
Across grade levels, students have been stretching themselves in remarkable ways: discovering their voices, collaborating across divisions, taking creative risks, and supporting one another with the kind of kindness and confidence that define the EDS experience. Whether stepping up to lead, practicing a new skill, or encouraging a friend to audition, our students show us—day after day—what it means to grow with purpose.
Faculty members involved in the production often remark on the energy that fills the Music Room and hallways—an energy rooted in curiosity, camaraderie, and the excitement of building something together. Students uplift one another, learn from every triumph and misstep, and celebrate the unique talents each cast member brings. It is, in every sense, a portrait of the learning community we are proud to nurture.
We look forward to sharing their hard work with the entire EDS community and our alumni family when Matilda Jr. takes the stage on March 27 and 28. We hope you will join us in celebrating the creativity and courage of our students, whose voices and talents continue to shape the heart of Erie Day School.

The Campus
At Erie Day School, our campus doesn’t end at the schoolyard—it extends right across the street to Frontier Park, one of Erie’s most beloved green spaces.
Having the park as our neighbor allows learning to spill outdoors in meaningful ways: picnics under the trees, extra recess adventures at The Griff slides, and—most recently—sledding days on one of the most iconic hills in the city. This December, our entire Middle School spent the day sledding, and the joy was unmistakable. Seeing students arrive at school with sleds in tow was a reminder that learning and childhood magic often go hand in hand.
While our own campus is nestled among trees and nature, the luxury of Frontier Park’s arboretum just steps away gives our students even more room to breathe, explore, and connect. Time outdoors nurtures curiosity, strengthens friendships, supports emotional well-being, and creates shared experiences that build lasting bonds.
At Erie Day School, nature isn’t just a backdrop—it’s part of how our students learn, grow, and belong.

The Teachers
Hannah Franz has been a cherished part of the Erie Day School community for nearly six years. As a Preschool teacher, her guiding motto—“Let big problems be big and small problems be small”—helps young learners navigate challenges with perspective and patience. For Hannah, kindness is at the heart of teaching: “Without kindness, we don’t have a welcoming environment that people want to be a part of.”
Her impact extends far beyond the classroom. Hannah co-leads the After Care program, served on the design team for this year’s EDS Holiday Tree at the Festival of the Trees, and continually steps up to support special school events. During last year’s annual fundraising auction, her father hand-crafted a custom outdoor couch, and Hannah collaborated with her students on a hand-printed pillow—together raising meaningful funds to support EDS. And who could forget the unforgettable Valentine’s Day party she and Miss Slater hosted, where it seemed nearly every student stayed after school to join the fun.
Outside of school, Hannah enjoys camping, spending time with her niece and nephews, and being with her dog, Buggy—a beloved four-legged friend her students are always eager to hear about. Her favorite EDS tradition is morning meetings, a daily opportunity to connect with her students and set a positive tone for the day.
Through her dedication, creativity, and unwavering kindness, Hannah continues to inspire students, families, and colleagues alike.
