The Latest

Erie Day School is thrilled to announce the appointment of Donald Fuller as the school’s next Head of School. Mr. Fuller is currently in a transitional role, working closely with current Head of School, Dr. Karen Tyler, who will conclude her remarkable tenure at the end of the 2024–25 academic year.

His selection follows a national search led by the EDS Board of Trustees and a dedicated search committee, with valuable input from faculty, staff, families, students, and alumni. The process reflected what makes EDS so special—an engaged community committed to finding a leader who will continue to nurture excellence, character, and connection.

Mr. Fuller comes to EDS with extensive experience in educational leadership. He most recently served as Director of Educational Leadership for the Diocese of Erie, supporting 27 schools in curriculum development, academic growth, and professional learning. A former principal and curriculum director, Mr. Fuller is known for improving academic outcomes, creating inclusive school environments, and putting student growth at the center of everything he does.

His leadership style is collaborative, student-focused, and grounded in values that align closely with the EDS mission. The school is confident that his vision and experience will help guide Erie Day School into its next chapter—one that honors our nearly 100-year history while continuing to grow and evolve.

Please join us in warmly welcoming Mr. Fuller to the EDS family!

The Students

Erie Day School is proud to celebrate the accomplishments of our 8th Grade graduates! These remarkable students will officially commence on Thursday, June 5 at 7:00 PM. As tradition holds, we are hopeful for beautiful weather so that the ceremony may take place on the front lawn—an EDS hallmark that marks this milestone in a meaningful and memorable way.

Please join us in congratulating the following graduates and wishing them continued success as they take their next steps beyond EDS: Adam Giancola, Wesley Griffith, and Royce Williams will attend Cathedral Preparatory School; Evren Gitmez and Wyatt Person are heading to McDowell Honors College; Alex He will attend Torrey Pines High School; Ethan He, Luca Pelkowski, Noah Schulze, Jillian Seon, Lucas Smiecinski, Julian Williams will attend Mercyhurst Preparatory School; and Arjun Noticewala and Hiraya Magno are bound for Collegiate Academy.

We are so proud of this outstanding group of students. Their time at Erie Day School has been marked by curiosity, creativity, kindness, and a commitment to learning. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for each of them!

The Campus

Erie Day School was bursting with life and energy during our recent 1-Mile Fun Run through the neighborhood! Students laced up and took to the streets, cheered on by parents armed with noisemakers, chalk art, water sprayers, and endless encouragement. Hand-decorated signs lined the route, and even our youngest Spartans had their moment in a shorter dash and return. Back on campus, the celebration continued with sweet treats, EDS swag, balloons, glitter, and pure joy.

And the fun isn’t over yet—our much-loved Field Day festivities are just around the corner! A spirited showdown between Team Blue and Team Orange, Field Day brings classic games, obstacle courses, sack races, and a few wet surprises to keep everyone cool. Huge thanks to our EDSA Parent Group for making these unforgettable moments possible.

Get ready, Spartans—Field Day is coming!

The Teachers

Since 2018, Mrs. Kristen Vandermerwe has brought warmth, patience, and expert care to the youngest learners at Erie Day School. She began her journey alongside longtime Toddler Room educator Ms. JoAnn, learning the rhythm and heart of the classroom. Upon Ms. JoAnn’s retirement, Mrs. Kristen seamlessly stepped into the lead role, guiding our toddler program with compassion and skill based on her Montessori Certification.

Running a toddler classroom requires more than just a love for children—it calls for a deep understanding of early childhood development, a calm and nurturing presence, boundless energy, creativity, and the ability to foster independence while maintaining structure. Mrs. Kristen brings all of this and more to her work each day, creating a safe, joyful environment where our littlest Spartans can explore, grow, and thrive.

Outside of EDS, Mrs. Kristen dedicates her time to meaningful community service. She works at the Thrifty Shopper, a thrift shop operated by the Erie City Mission, and has traveled the world on mission trips with a women’s group—journeying three times to the Dominican Republic to support communities in need.

We are grateful for Mrs. Kristen’s dedication, both inside and outside the classroom, and proud to have her as part of the EDS family.

The Alumni

Each year at Commencement, Erie Day School proudly celebrates the achievements of our graduating students with a series of meaningful awards that reflect the values of our community and the legacies of those who have helped shape it. These awards are especially significant because they are presented in honor of EDS alumni, by EDS alumni, or by EDS alumni faculty who are invited back to the graduation ceremony to take part in this special tradition.

Among the awards presented is the Henry E. Fish Scholar-Athlete Award, given by Doreatha Fish and Susan Fish Strayer in memory of their father, recognizing a student who excels in both academics and athletics. The Mary Walker Service Award, given by John and Susie Walker (Scott) honors a student who has shown exceptional helpfulness and dedication to the school community. Adele Larsen presents the Visual Arts Award to a student who demonstrates artistic skill and appreciation, while the Performing Arts Award, presented by Cherie Lachowski, goes to a student whose passion and effort in the arts has enriched school life. The David Gray Award, given by Second Grade Educator Mary Golba in memory of her son, celebrates outstanding sportsmanship among one male and one female student.

Together, these honors are a cherished part of the EDS graduation tradition, celebrating the character, creativity, and commitment that define our students and the lasting bond between our alumni and their alma mater.

It began with two mothers. Now it’s your turn.

100 Women. $100 Each. $10,000 for What Comes Next.

In 1929, two mothers started something extraordinary. Erie Day School exists because of their vision, courage, and belief in the power of education. Nearly a century later, we invite you to honor that legacy—not with your time, but with your participation.

Join the Founding Mothers Giving Circle, a collective of women committed to shaping what’s next for EDS students. From June 30 to July 4, we aim to raise $10,000 by uniting 100 women in a simple act of giving.

Every donor will receive a pair of custom earrings designed just for this occasion by Nesting Doll, along with a permanent place on the Founding Mothers tribute displayed in our school. As we continue writing the story of Erie Day School, we look to see who will be part of it—who will help carry the legacy forward.

You don’t have to wait until July. Donations are open now—and every gift gets us closer to our goal.

Please join the movement. Be part of something lasting. Be one of the 100.
