Principal's Message

Mr. Russell D. Petrocelli

Dear Spartan Community:

Mid Term Exams and Catholic Schools Week have come and gone and we have started the second half of the school year…we had a beautiful Junior Ring Ceremony…the Junior Semi Formal took place on the day before Valentine’s Day and Spirit Week begins the week of March 3.

The students will begin the process of course selection for the next school year and parents will be contacted by one of the school counselors related to this process. This is always an exciting process, most particularly for our Rising Seniors as they prepare for their final year of high school.

It is hard to believe that we are already talking about dates in March. The school community will gather for Mass on Wednesday, March 5, 2025 as we begin the Penitential Season of Lent with our Ash Wednesday liturgy. Mass will start at 9:45 AM and all are invited to participate.

As a school community, we welcomed the Accepted Students for the Class of 2029 (yes, I said 2029) on January 29th and we are looking forward to these new Spartans entering the DePaul Catholic community. This year, we have welcomed 46 transfer students as more and more families are recognizing that DePaul Catholic High School is the place to be. I thank all of our families for their support and commitment to Catholic education and your assistance in continuing the mission that makes DePaul Catholic High School the outstanding institution that it has been for almost 70 years!

Please visit this newsletter on a regular basis to be brought up to speed on the happenings across the campus.

Annual Appeal

Mr. Theodore Gaffney

Our Annual Appeal is now more than halfway completed. Listed below are the results of our efforts year to date and the balance left to achieve our goals. We need further support from all of you to help us fund our Academic Merit Scholarships and to provide funding to allow us to make the necessary capital improvements to our facilities and grounds. We need your help and participation to make our FY2025 Appeal a success. Many hands make light work. Your support is greatly appreciated.

These funds are necessary to ensure that DePaul Catholic has the best possible teachers and administrators to educate and guide its students; maintains an affordable tuition; has safe, clean, and updated facilities and that we are providing our students with the best possible faith-based, college preparatory education we can. We are committed to educating our students for life, and we encourage you to join us in this commitment.

Thank you for your support thus far and your continued support in helping us meet our goals!

Campus Ministry

2025 CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

DePaul Catholic High School's Campus Ministry and Theology Department have had a very busy winter season especially during “Catholic Schools Week.” The Spartans participated in a beautiful Spanish Mass, which was presided by a guest priest, Father Diego Monsalve, from Saint Peter the Apostle ' Church in Parsippany, NJ.

“Todos lo puedo en Cristo que me fortalece.”

Filipenses 4:13

The students were blessed to have three guest speakers come to De Paul Catholic High School and speak about vocations and spiritual life. Thank you Reverend Charles Lana, Deacon Joseph, and Stephan Klass for sharing your stories.

The Spartans continued Catholic Schools Week by giving generously to the “Wildfire Relief Fund” to assist those who have been affected by the fires in California. Over $200.00 dollars was collected. The peer leaders baked goods for the faculty and staff to show their appreciation for everything they do. Finally, a super fun pep rally took place and the students beat the teachers in “tug a war”! Go Spartans!

The Spartans ended the week by attending a “Youth Night” at St. Anthony’s in Hawthorne led by Father Frank. Our own Spartan, Jake Lopez, along with his Jazz band, played music for our Spartans as they spent the evening worshiping and community building. These events really encompassed the De Paul Catholic community and our Catholic Identity.

SOPHOMORE RETREAT

Our Sophomore class attended their retreat “CHOICES” at Our Lady of Consolation Church in Wayne, NJ. They celebrated mass with Father Joey and Father Frank, played team-building games, and listened to a “Witness Talk” given by our own faculty member, Mrs. Nancy McGrady. It was a day spent growing in relationship with the Lord!

As we look forward to the “Lenten Season,” our Spartans will be involved in the 3 Pillars of Lent: Prayer, Fasting, and Almsgiving. We will begin the season with Ash Wednesday mass on March 5th at 9:45 am; all are welcome to attend. The students will participate in prayer services, reconciliation, stations of the cross, and service projects within Theology classes. Please continue to pray for our students as they grow in faith.

Congratulations Ashley!

ITALIAN CLUB

For the Italian Club's February meeting, the members made treat bags for our loved ones and added cards to show our appreciation. We colored and decorated a card with a Valentine's message to gift to others and shared snacks while working together to make these treats for our friends and family.

Buon San Valentino!

Happy Valentine's Day!!

SPANISH CLUB

Led by club advisor, Mrs. Eglah Dicksen,

the Spanish Club celebrated "El Dia de San Valentin," this month where each student had the opportunity to design their own Valentine's Day cards, taste delicious chocolates, and enjoy great "experiencias" with their peers.

NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY & LEO CLUB

During the month of February, the National Honor Society members and the Leo Club members partnered up to raise money for the American Heart Association during Heart Health Awareness month. Heart healthy candy grams were sold by the National Honor Society and fun competitions were led by the Leo members in all physical education classes. Courtesy of the American Heart Association, all winners received prizes and great pride.

Junior Semi-Formal

DePaul Catholic High School hosted its Annual Junior Semi-Formal on Thursday, February 13th, at Macaluso's in Hawthorne, New Jersey. At this fantastic yearly event, the Class of 2026 had the opportunity to "dance the night away!"

Junior Ring Ceremony

The Class of 2026 was honored with a special night celebrating their Junior Ring Ceremony. A longstanding Spartan tradition, the Junior Ring Ceremony seeks to bring the class together as they reflect on how their DePaul Catholic experience has shaped them thus far, and how they will soon be entrusted with the leadership of the school once the current Seniors graduate. Congratulations to the Junior Class on receiving these unique Spartan rings.

Senior Mass of Light

In December, the DePaul Catholic High School community gathered to celebrate the traditional Senior Mass of Light. Father Joey shared an enlightening homily that encouraged everyone to seek the light of Christ during the Advent season. The Mass was concelebrated by Father Frank and Father Brian. Every senior held their candle in prayer, hope, and love, inspiring them to be the light in the world throughout the next chapters of their lives.

Alumni Love Stories

“From being the Class Couple of the Class of 1974 to 50 years later, (46 years married) — still together,

with kids and grandkids.

It all started at DePaul Catholic!”

-Dennis Atieh & Sandy Farro Atieh

“Bob and Christine met as Christine wandered into a classroom afterschool where Bob happened to be standing at the front writing an algebra problem on the board. After an instant connection, they attended dances and daily Mass services together and went on to be married after 6 years of dating. After 52 years of marriage, they now have two children and four grandchildren.”

-Bob Trezza and Christine Phillips

“Karen and Robert were in the Class of 1963.They sat behind each other in English class junior year and attended the 1962 Valentine’s Day CYO dance at Saint Mary’s in Pompton Lakes together. They got married after they graduated college in 1967 and now are retired in Austin, Texas with two children and three grandchildren.”

Their love story is now 63 years old on this past Valentine’s Day!

-Karen Tallia and Robert Knaus

“MaryAnn and Randy graduated together in 1972 from DePaul Catholic. Although their paths rarely crossed the first three years, they eventually met down at the Jersey shore over the summer before senior year. They started dating that Fall and got married a few years later. They now have three sons and six grandchildren. Their son Greg also went on to marry his high school sweetheart and carry the Spartan love throughout their family.”

-MaryAnn Citro and Randy Profeta

"MaryAnn Munro is a 1987 Graduate of DPHS and met her husband in November of senior year. He would pick her up from school everyday back then, since she didn’t have a car. Matt is a 1987 graduate of Kinnelon H.S. They have been together since November, 1986 with 2 grown children and still have their best friends from their DePaul days."

"Corinne McGowan was fortunate enough to have multiple beautiful love stories come from her time at DePaul, 1960 to 1964. In 1970, she married Dave Gleason. They shared 44 happy years, four children, and 11 grandchildren. He returned to DePaul in 1968, and taught and coached for a few years. He passed away peacefully in 2014. In 2021,

Greg Baumbach and Corinne married. His beloved wife had passed away in 2017.

They were happily married for 48 years, and were blessed with 6 children, and 16 grandchildren. They exchanged vows in front of their 10 children and 27 grandchildren. They remain happily married, and enjoyed attending their 60 year DePaul reunion together last October. Her twin sister, Patricia, also graduated with them, another kind of a beautiful love story. She, like Dave and Greg, impacted Corinne's life in so many positive ways."
