“Educating Students for Success
in a Changing World”

I  pledge to be a self-advocate who believes in my potential; to care for myself, my family, my community, and our environment. I will show the quality of my character by being trustworthy, respectful, and valuing the uniqueness of myself and others. I will remember that where I fail, I learn. I will be mindful and take each moment as an opportunity to grow.
Principal's Corner
Last year we had two graduating seniors, CeCe M. and Gabby M. who became our first student mentors. This experience was very positive and paved the way to our Students That Are Role-models (S.T.A.R.) program introduced this year.

Each year two students will be interviewed by a panel of staff and selected to be our mentors for the year. As mentors they will help other students in areas of need; whether that be socially, academically, or in the community.

This year we have been very proud of our two S.T.A.R. mentors - Jerome D. and Alex M. They go above and beyond to be positive role models and be supportive of the other students; both at school and in the community. They are always willing to lend a hand to others students and to staff; they stay active in the school serving other important roles like on our student council. Thank you both for making the first year with our S.T.A.R. program so successful and keeping the bar high for all others that will follow.
YMCA Drumming
The students and staff at Spectrum Charter School had the opportunity to participate in a drumming class at the local YMCA. The class was led by Ms. Coleen Bortz. The students were each given an exercise ball, a base to hold it still, and a pair of drumsticks. Ms. Coleen led the students through a variety of different songs and movements. They learned new rhythms that incorporated the top of the ball, sides of the ball, and the floor. The class started off with the
” YMCA” and finished with a “hand jive”. It was a fun filled, high energy class.
A good time was had by all of the students and staff
Shop-n-Save Tour: Learning Outside the Classroom
On April 1 st the Murrysville Shop-n-Save invited Ms. Lori’s class to tour the “behind the scene’ departments of their store. The students visited and learned about the produce, bakery, deli, meat and stock area from Mr. Rob, the store manager.
The students learned information on a price label which included the packaging information and how they determine when to order more supplies. The cashier demonstrated how to use the computerized cash register and Mr. Rob answered questions the students had.
“My favorite part of the tour was learning about the deli. They even gave us a sample of the cheese”, said Skylar.
“I enjoyed watching the cashier ring out the items on the cash register,” added Brandon.
Overall, Ms. Lori’s students enjoyed the tour of Shop-n-Save and some even gained an interest of working there!
Thank You Mr. Rob &
Shop-n-Save.
Born To Perform

Spectrum Charter School student’s kicked off the first week of April by celebrating with our annual talent show! The school was packed with friends, family and the community supporting our student’s with all of their various talents. This year performances included magic shows, singing, playing instruments and so much more! Students worked hard for several weeks perfecting their acts and it sure did pay off! We are so proud of the students for getting up on stage and showing everyone that they are unique and talented despite their differences. We can’t wait to see what next year’s talent show will bring!
We Are Community Focused
Being community focused is an important value and lesson that is taught and practiced at Spectrum Charter School. We support those around us by being committed workers and community volunteers.

Ms. Marie’s class has volunteered this school year at the Monroeville Public Library, Lincoln Park Community Center and Animals Friends. We enjoy helping others and animals !
The Frick Experience

This school year, Ms. Marie’s class visited The Frick Pittsburgh monthly. Working with Ms. June, the students were able to explore the museums and gardens. Each visit the students, with the guidance of a staff artist, created their own artwork that reflected upon their experiences at The Frick.

Their artwork included a variety of mediums and they even made their own tempura paints using pigments and egg as the binding agent.

The students toured the Scenic Gardens and Greenhouse, the Frick Art Museum for the Isabelle de Borchgrave: Fashioning Art from Paper exhibit as well as their permanent art collection, the Historic Clayton Mansion, and the Car and Carriage Museum. The Car and Carriage Museum was their favorite! The students were able to mimic an assembly-line production based on Henry Ford’s assembly line for the Model T.

For the classrooms not visiting The Frick this school year, Ms. June brought the History Mystery, traveling history museum, to Spectrum Charter School on Wednesday, April 17 th .

Ms. Marie’s class is so grateful for this opportunity to explore The Frick Pittsburgh this school year and is looking forward to their next and final visit in May.
