Lenten Worship Series: From Hosanna to Hallelujah

Lent invites us to slow down, to pay attention, and to walk honestly with Jesus through the final days of his life. This year, our Lenten worship series is titled From Hosanna to Hallelujah. Following the path of Passion Week, we will trace the road Jesus walks from the shouts of welcome on Palm Sunday through disruption, intimacy, service, grief, and witness, all the way to Easter morning. This is not a journey that rushes to resurrection. It is an invitation to stay, to notice, and to walk together through love that costs something and love that endures.

Throughout Lent, we invite people of all ages to follow this road together.

Wherever you find yourself on the road, you are welcome to walk with us.

From Hosanna to Hallelujah, we journey together.

Intergenerational Maundy Thursday Prayer Experience

April 2 at 6 pm in the Sanctuary

The Liturgical Arts Team invites you to a self-directed experience from 6 pm to 7 pm on Maundy Thursday. This intergenerational event invites you to multiple interactive experiences that invite participation in the Lent experience and a personal experience with the story. Foot or hand washing will be available. This will be held in the Sanctuary.

Good Friday

April 3

We have added a daytime opportunity to mark Good Friday. FBC will host an ecumenical gathering around the cross on our lawn at noon, April 3rd. We will be joined by several downtown churches in a meaningful moment of worship. Our annual observance of Good Friday will be at 6pm in the Fellowship Hall.

Small Group Opportunities in Lent

Making Space

Everything feels big right now — too much, too heavy, too fast. During Lent, Making Space offers an intentional time to pause and practice holding space instead of shrinking.

The group, led by Angel Kenison-Scott, will gather on Wednesdays from 6:00–7:00 pm in the Small Conference Room (E2), February 25 through April 1. Using For Such a Time as This: An Emergency Devotional by Hanna Reichell, participants will read a chapter aloud each week and reflect together. The group will not move through the book in order but will engage selected readings that invite conversation about holding space for our feelings, our faith, and our shared experiences when everything feels like too much.

No preparation is required. Copies of the book will be available for those who would like one, and all are welcome to come and simply listen. This hour is an opportunity to practice being present with one another in real time and to remember that God is not small, nor do they wish us to be.

Rest & Reflect

Gather Sunday mornings at 10:15 am in the Green Room to practice guided meditation and reflection on the Scripture. Through silence, journaling, and calm we will center ourselves on what God is saying to us. Make space and time for this practice in your Lent.

Entering the Passion of Jesus

In support of our church-wide Lenten study, “Entering the Passion of Jesus: A Beginner's Guide to Holy Week”, the Discussion Class invites all to join us in a six-week study designed to provide additional insight as we discuss the book in more depth than it would be possible to do during a sermon. We welcome you to bring your curiosity, your questions, and the uniqueness that only you can add to our group. We meet Sunday mornings between services (10:15-11:00) in the Parlor, which is on the second floor of the education building. We will start this class on February 22.

*Please let Pastor Kristin know if you are interested in discussing the book at another time during the week. If there is enough interest, we can start an additional group.

Books for Small Groups

Copies of Entering the Passion of Jesus and For Such a Time as This: An Emergency Devotional will be available for purchase in the church office.

  • Entering the Passion of Jesus: $10
  • For Such a Time as This: An Emergency Devotional: $20

If cost is a concern, please feel free to contribute $5 instead—your participation matters more than the price.

Resources for families and children will echo the same themes in simple, embodied ways, so that our whole community can share a common journey. At the Pancake Party, families had option of taking home a Lenten Devotional. If you would like to receive this each week via email, you can sign up by clicking the link below. If you would like to receive a printed copy of the devotional, you can pick one up on the 3rd floor or email Pastor Brittany

Upcoming Events

Eggstravaganza

Wednesday, March 11 from 5:30 to 7:30 PM

We are partnering with the Samples and their ministry for the Afghan Easter Picnic, where more than 400 children will gather for an afternoon of celebration and community. They need thousands of filled plastic Easter eggs, and we are committing to help.

Join us for Eggstravaganza, an intergenerational evening of stuffing eggs, playing games, and sending joy across the country. Come for the whole time or drop in for part of the evening. All ages are welcome.

You can also help by bringing wrapped candy, plastic eggs, or by stuffing and taping eggs at home and returning them on March 11. Every egg will be opened by a child who is deeply loved by their community and by God.

For more information click the button below or email Pastor Brittany.

Let’s send joy together!

On A Hill Far Away...

Saturday March 14 at 4pm

Lent is a journey through darkness towards the light and renewal of Easter. Please join the Chancel Bells and handbell musicians across Columbia for an Ecumenical Lenten Handbell Concert and Reflection on Saturday, March 14th at 4pm in the sanctuary. We will enjoy a time of music, prayer, and reflection as we seek hope in the darkness and raise our eyes towards the hills in search of God's light. The concert is free and open to the public.

Exploring Jordan: Images of History

March 15 - 4:00 pm in the Parlor

On March 15, at 4:00 pm in the parlor, Mark Thomas will present a pictorial narrative of his recent trip to the country of Jordan. Jordan is a treasure-trove of ancient Biblical and archaeological sites that are often overlooked by modern scholars and travelers. Janie Rees-Miller will join Mark to add her perspectives gleaned from 30 years of archaeological and linguistic work in the region.

The presentation will highlight visits to Bethany across the Jordan, the World Heritage Site of Jesus’ Baptism, Mount Nebo, where Moses and the Israelites first viewed the Promised Land, Petra, the ancient Nabatean capital and site of hundreds of spectacular rock carvings, the well-preserved Greco-Roman Decapolis City of Gerash, the region bordering Lake Tiberias, the Golan Heights and Syria, and more as time permits.

Refreshments and snacks will be provided.  Please join us for this fun and educational presentation!

Work Day Opportunity at Stonebridge House

March 28 - 8 am-1 pm

Stonebridge House is accredited as a 4-bed recovery house in downtown Columbia that provides shelter and guidance to women coming out of prison for 12 months. They are one of our partners in ministry, allowing us to be a part of this beautiful work.

They are getting the house ready to welcome the next woman to come out of incarceration and into a new story where she is a main character. If you would like to be part of this story, you are invited to participate in a work day.

Join us for some light cleaning, organizing and decorating on March 28, 8am-1pm. If you have a vision for how the space could look, talk with Rebekah Robertson. Rebekah@stonebridgehouse.org. Let Rebekah know if you can come because lunch will be provided.

Prayers & Concerns

We Want to Pray for You

At First Baptist, we believe community is stronger when we support one another in prayer. If there’s something on your mind, a concern, a hope, or a celebration, our pastors would be honored to hold it in prayer with you.

Your prayer requests are kept private with our pastoral team. Share your request anytime through our Prayer Request page, and know that you are held in prayer. Because we are better together, your joys and burdens matter to us.
