A Message from our Head of School Regarding the Current Civil Unrest
Dear Members and Friends of the St. John's Parish Day School Community,
In light of the current events in our country, we want to assure the St. John’s community of our commitment to promoting inclusivity and diversity. We are a community that lives in its Mission and Episcopalian philosophy every day and know that change begins with education and respect for all! For this reason, it is critically important that we teach early and often explicitly about respect, inclusivity, and racism. We stand ready to help our families talk to their children and have provided numerous resources to assist you below. Literature is just one way to teach our children to value one another and embrace our differences.
These past few weeks have vividly reminded us of the pervasive racism in our society. Asian-American and Pacific Islanders have been targeted by racism in this time of COVID-19. Blatant examples of violence toward the Black community have played out in front of our eyes. To our racially diverse families, please know that you and your child(ren) are greatly valued members of the SJPDS community. Our rich diversity of race is a treasured aspect of the SJPDS experience and we must support each other. All families who join our community are asked to commit to a better world where we live the values of equity, respect and kindness more fully. Our hearts are broken with these continued injustices and we pray for peace for all.
SJPDS continually looks at our program to ensure best practices, equity and continued growth for all constituents, and train our faculty and staff accordingly. Just this past Monday, several administrators attended an Association of Independent Maryland Schools (AIMS) seminar entitled Race, Remote Learning, & Responsibility, as well as the diversity, equity, and justice webinars, attended throughout the year. Daily chapel is a time of community, prayer, song and reflection. We provide an atmosphere that fosters spiritual grounding in the Episcopal tradition with respect for the beliefs of all people of all faiths. Continuing to learn and grow is our goal for everyone in our community and we know this will inspire future change!
Our
Diversity Statement
reflects what we stand for as a school and model for our students every day. “We strive to create a community that honors and values the worth and dignity of every human being. With this foundation, we know that our children are best prepared for success in an ever changing world.”
May peace be with you all and our continued prayers for a healing Nation!
Lori Dembo
Head of School
