Children look forward to birthdays and holidays because they hope to receive good things! This is a wonderful way to approach Pentecost! When we embrace the possibilities of the gifts of the Holy Spirit in our own lives, we can get our youth excited about them too! Each of the seven gifts – Wisdom, Understanding, Counsel, Piety, Fortitude (courage), Knowledge, and Fear of God – is a share of Christ himself!

They are active and engaging, enabling the movement of the Holy Spirit within us. Each gift is wrapped in a bottomless box to be unpacked endlessly.

What do children need help with, maybe courage, piety, or knowledge? What are their fears? Do they need help being attentive at Mass or in the classroom? Do they wish they knew (e.g.) why is so-and-so is unhappy? These types of questions can begin to help them understand these special gifts of the Holy Spirit.

The Holy Spirit has so much to offer!

What do the children aspire to become? My former mentor, Fr. Francis Martin , offered a list of actionable gifts of the Holy Spirit identified throughout the scriptures – e.g. leadership, teaching, exhortation. Which gifts of Holy Spirit would help? Do they want to become president of the United States or maybe a nurse? The possibilities are endless. Now isn't Pentecost exciting !
