The Splendour of Species Tulips | | |
|
|
Dating back to the 16th century from the Mediterranean, Asia Minor and the Caucasus, Species Tulips are perfect little packages, yielding determined yet delicate, diminutive flowers that tend to perennialize, and even naturalize, more freely than other Tulip classes.
Species Tulips offer unusual flowers in varying heights and dazzling colors and are wonderful for rock gardens, sweet clusters and naturalized drifts. Some appear to stage wild garden dances with graceful abandon, while others stand brightly at attention in organized clusters just waiting to be admired.
These dainty darlings may look small, but they pack a pretty punch, and are so much fun to tuck into nooks and crannies and plant in ethereal drifts. Their happy faces will make you smile each sunny morning.

What a Show from Little Bulbs!
Species Tulips create top-size bulbs that are considerably smaller than the average Tulip bulb, just 5 cm to 6 cm in circumference. They're easier to plant since they're smaller! As you select the perfect Species Tulips for your gardens, please double check each variety for its horticultural hardiness.
Some are good from horticultural zone 3 (colder areas), while others are good from horticultural zone 5. While all are good through HZ 8, some are known to perform well in really warm HZ 9 and 10 areas: Tulipa acuminata, T. clusiana Cynthia, T. clusiana var. chrysantha, T. clusiana var. chrysantha Tubergen's Gem and T. saxatilis.
While most Species Tulips perform as good perennials when they're happy where they're planted, some are known to be good naturalizers: Tulipa acuminata, T. clusiana var. chrysantha, T. dasystemon, T. humilis Helene, T. kolpakowskiana, T. linifolia, T. clusiana Peppermint Stick, T. saxatilis, T. sylvestris, T. turkestanica and T. whittallii. You'll love them all.

Easy Fall Planting
You'll need about nine Species Tulip bulbs per square foot of planting area. Prior to planting, store the bulbs in a cool, dry spot (50°F to 70°F) with good air circulation and low humidity, away from heat, frost and strong sunlight. Plant the bulbs 4" to 5" deep and 6" apart in neutral pH, well-draining soil after the ground has chilled to 55°F. For marginally hardy varieties, plant the bulbs in a protected spot, like near your home's foundation. Wait until the surface of the ground freezes before applying no more than a 2" layer of mulch.
Dead-head the flowers after they fade. Allow the foliage to thrive and die back naturally. Species Tulips may come back for years if they are happy where planted and never disturbed. The best naturalizers are Tulipa acuminata, T. clusiana Cynthia, Lady Jane, Peppermint Stick and var. chrysantha, T. dasystemon, T. humilis Eastern Star, Helene and Persian Pearl (and our Tulipa humilis Mixture), T. kolpakowskiana, T. linifolia, T. saxatilis, T. sylvestris, T. turkestanica, T. whittallii and our Wild Species Tulip Mixture!
