Valley Trivia 101 pop quiz:

Felts Field is Spokane's original airport and was one of the first one's in the West to be officially recognized by the federal government in 1926. What year did aviation activities begin at this historical strip?

Answer at the bottom.

The Frog and The Prince of Eatin', Ryan Heaton

I have known Ryan Heaton, owner of the Valley Senior Froggy's since about 1973 when he and I played trumpet at Bowdish Junior High. I was a consistent third or fourth chair below Renny Smith and Teresa Tsalaky while Ryan, who was a year younger, normally sat far below.

Everyone hated those surprise tryouts that publicly and painfully exposed our lack of musical talent and lazy practicing habits. Anything could happen. More than once I sat at the bottom after a humiliating attempt, only to look up the line to see Ryan beaming back down at me from my old chair after he had pulled off an unusually good performance.

Even on his best trumpet days, I would not have put him on my most-likely-to-succeed list. It was not until high school when he began bussing tables at the Valley Red Lion that it became apparent that he possessed first-chair talent in the hospitality field .

One year out of high school at age 19, he was managing The 1881 Room at the Sheraton Hotel downtown. Back then Patsy Clark's was their main competition, today it would be Churchill's or Spencer's, which is at the 1881 Room's former location.

After problems developed with a new general manager, Ryan thought he could do better and so applied for the manager position when it came open at the neighboring Casablanca restaurant, owned by the Omni Corporation.

                                    My Kind of Dinner Date

You don't have to drink alchoholic beverages to make out like a bandit in bar, you just need to be in the bar. Unlike in the past, now days nearly every bar and lounge with access to a good kitchen offers great appetizer specials for around $5 during their designated Happy Hour, which is roughly 4 to 6 in the afternoon.

Personally, I see the word appetizer read "dinner" when I go to Charlie P's and get two of his bbq ribs that are to sleep for, meaning I look forward to sleeping the night before I so that I can dream about what they will be like the next day. The ribs come with a hearty, though bad for your hearty, basket of  fries and so where the ribs don't get me the fries always do.

Done correctly, two people can eat for $5 or $6. The other day Elaine and I shared 3 sliders - pulled pork, sweet thai chicken and a fantastic loaded burger- at $1.50 apiece and got two wings for $1.50. So we had a tastey little dinner for $6.

The Black Diamond is another place with great specials. We ate their nachos for $5 and had enough for a fair-to-middling to-go box left over, but nachos don't travel well for us. It helps to be light eaters occassionally, which is one of the ultimate money saving tips.

It is probably nothing to be proud of that I often plan many of our dining out experiences with happy hour bargains in mind, but I must admit to having squired my woman on a few dinner dates for Monday free pizza at the Iron Horse. Nothing gets me more in the mood than the word "free", but I mostly save those special occassions for the fall when there is Monday Night Football on t.v.. That really helps the romance.

More money saving tips.

                                                 Handy Hint

These are all you need in the ongoing challenge every homeowner who bathes at least a few times a month under goes attempting to keep all caulk lines in the bathroom performing their duty. The one on the left, G.E.'s Supreme Silicone, will do 95 % of the time.

Use it at the backsplash, sink and toilet every time. The thing that sold me on this one is that it is easier to work with than most silicones that can be sticky and hard to make look good. You can also get it wet after 30 minutes and it has a good 10-year, mold-free guarantee, though that is a pretty easy claim to make considering how hard it would to disprove if it started to mold after nine years. Who would keep the receipt anyway?

It is also great in the shower, use it everywhere. The only time you would need the heavy hitter on the right is in problem areas or just if you want to use the ultimate silicone caulk. I use it where the wall meets the floor on all the mud-set tile showers we install. It is a colored product from Laticrete developed commercial use in swimming pools, saunas and fountains.

You can get this product, Latasil Tile and Stone Sealant, on line or at the Masonry Center at  16311 East Euclid.

Is it Just Me?

I wish the powers that be would explain to me why they felt there was any value in running an expensive ad campaign for the building permit department as far as the taxpayers of Spokane Valley were concerned. It makes no sense to me.

First of all, who are they aiming at? Being in the building industry, I can tell you that the segment of our local population that wants to build something right now is rather small. On top of that, most of them will hire a contractor who doesn't have to be told by the Walmart manager what its like getting a permit in the Valley.

In a sense, it doesn't matter if they are the best or the worst in the nation. If a guy wants an addition in the Valley he's going to have to get the permit right here, the ads have nothing to do with anything.

So what is the purpose of the campaign? It can't be to get more people to decide on building a new home in the Valley because their builder will be happier dealing with the building department here rather than in  Seattle or some other town. Those kind of big decisions don't hinge on the the building department.

Maybe it is to try to convince us that what we percieve as a bad experience is really good compared to the experiences Walmart managers are used to. If they are trying to convince the professionals, it won't work because we deal with at least 2 other local building departments if not a lot more.

If they had my mug up on that billboard it would say "Spokane Valley has been the best local building department when it comes to obtaining permits not counting the Spokane City and Spokane County."

That is not to say the Spokane Valley building department is a bad experience. Actually it is a pretty close race and that is my biggest problem with this ad campaign.

It is just a local government agency like the assessor's office or treasure's office. Who decided they need our tax dollars going for their public relations cause? Why would we want them all wasting our tax money with ad campaigns trying to convince us we should like them?

Maybe the justice department ought to put up a billboard with the picture of a career criminal saying "Spokane has been the best place for obtaining justice for my crimes that I have ever dealt with in my long career." Maybe that would help us feel better when we had to go to traffic court, probably not though. Who would believe a crook?

   Ryan Heaton

They liked the looks of the kid but not the idea of him running a place where he was not old enough to go into the bar, especially when its nightclub was downtown's hottest. They lured Ryan away by offering him a better salary and a manager position at their Taco Time on Division.

At one time, Omni had a big operation in Spokane. They owned Casablanca, all the Taco Times, Fuddrucker's and The Rocking Horse Saloon. Ryan became a key team player they moved around to run other local Taco Times for a few years.

Then they sent him to California to open a new Fuddrucker's before coming back to open and manage their new Spokane Fuddruckers, which is a gourmet hamburger franchise. By the time he was 25, they put him at the helm of their starship, The Casablanca where he was in charge of four assistant managers and 95 employees.

After meeting Dave Hooke at a golf tournament, Ryan decided it would be better to raise his two young boys on fast food.

The plan was that he would be allowed to buy into Dave's local franchise, Senor Froggy's, a move designed to help fund Dave's retirement and secure one for himself. That was 23 years ago and things have progressed nicely, with Ryan owning the Valley and Indiana Froggy's.

The nice progress has come through a battle of wits and hard work against difficulties like relentless national competition, an abysmal economy and a traffic shift that did not work in his favor. Ryan has kept his Froggy's hopping by using two key strategies.

One of the strategies was cutting edge when he became a Bruchi's franchisee and co-branded it together with his two Senior Froggy's 11 years ago. He was the first in Spokane to implement this nationwide trend, offering two original Spokane franchises in one location.

Beyond menus that complimented each other, Ryan and Bruce Greene, founder and owner of Bruchi's worked well together, having known each other from the Casablanca days when Bruce was an assistant manager under Ryan. Currently, they are partners in the new Cheney Bruchi's and up until January, Ryan ran the North Town and Valley Mall Bruchi's.

Knowing a year in advance that he would be loosing his lease at the malls, Ryan took the co-branding concept to the next level, coco-branding, and brought in Itallalian Express, another local franchise that had been started by Dave Hooke with recipes supplied by Luigi's owner, Marty Hoberg , who had been one of Ryan's busboy at the 1881 Room.

The second strategy Ryan has implemented is himself. He will tell you he believes he has been at the same location for 23 years because they deliver a consistent, quality product for a good price. While that may be true, Ryan is the one who has ensured those standards day in, day out. He is hands-on and works everyday, 40 hours a week. When you combine that work ethic with a 1st-chair talent for playing to a room full of diners, The Froggy is going to make it even in the rough waters of the Spokane Valley fast food pond.

When I took Mom to lunch there the other day, he took our order at the counter and delivered the meal. It occurred to me how unusual it is at a fast food place for anyone, let alone the owner, to bring the food out even though it seems like a pretty simple but accommodating service to provide. I guess that it is something that only an owner who enjoyed working with his crew and serving his customers would be happy to do. I imagine most owners would not enjoy either.

I could tell Ryan, however, is the oddball owner who is happy to be doing what he was doing and to be where he is at. As I sat looking up at him from my chair while he cheerfully cleared our table, I recognized that look of contentment on his face from forty years before and I knew it was genuine.

Valley Trivia 101

Just ten years after the Wright Brothers first flew in 1903, Felts Field began being used by local pilots. In 1929, Nick Mamer and Art Walker set several endurance records after departing from Felts Field and then flying for 120 straight hours while covering 7,200 miles.

They refueled in the air from milk jugs of gasoline lowered by rope from other planes. In 1938, Mamer and 9 others died when the commercial plane he was piloting crashed near Bozeman.

The Mamer Memorial Clock Tower still ticks away near the Skyway Cafe, the popular local diner at Felts Field.
