Beloved Artist Whose Work Graces University Building Passes Away

San Antonio artist Joe Villarreal, whose vibrant and heartfelt works are prominently displayed throughout the University’s Senator Frank L. Madla Building, passed away recently at the age of 72 after a battle with cancer. A proud West Side native, Villarreal spent over 50 years capturing the Mexican American experience through joyful paintings and whimsical sculptures that earned national recognition. His legacy lives on in iconic pieces like La Familia, El Icecrinero, and the University-commissioned jaguar mural, all celebrating culture, community, and everyday life.
