From the Director

Autumn Greetings from the CETL!

In this issue of The Spotlight, we cover topics such as A.I., culturally responsive teaching, engagement, and Canvas tips. These topics have come from faculty requests and questions because our goal is to provide the most relevant information that we can. Thank you for all that you do in the classroom to make our students successful!

Warm regards,

Dr. Rupe & The CETL Team

Change Assignment Status

Each student is unique. Therefore, you can change the status of their assignments as needed.

Missing assignment due to a sports competition?

Did you allow an extended deadline?

You can go into the gradebook and manually change the status from "Missing" or "Late" to "None."

Are you excusing a student from an assignment? Update the status to "Yellow" for "Excused."

To change the status, click the grade in the grade book, then click the right arrow to open the grade details panel.

From there, select the updated status. You can even leave a comment if desired, such as "Approved late submission due to volleyball tournament."

QUICK TIP:

Publish Your Modules!

Be sure the module itself is published, not just the contents and assignments inside the module.

A gray circle to the right of the module title needs to be green!

To ensure students can see the module and its contents, click the gray module circle, then select "Publish module and all items".

In the image above, the items inside the module are published, but the module is unpublished.

In this case, students will NOT see the module or its contents, leading to confusion.

What Is Culturally Responsive Teaching?

For decades, researchers have found that teachers in public schools have undervalued the potential for academic success among students of color, setting low expectations for them and thinking of cultural differences as barriers rather than assets to learning.

Accessibility Training Course for Faculty

Faculty members were recently enrolled in a required accessibility course through Canvas this week. You should see it on your dashboard.

This course is self-paced for your convenience, only takes approximately 2 hours to complete, and can be completed a little bit at a time. The final deadline for completing this has been extended to May 17th. Be sure to finish this on or before this date.

Accessibility is the practice of ensuring that all people, including those with disabilities, have equal access to information and opportunities. In the context of higher education, this means that all students should be able to access and participate in their courses and programs, regardless of their abilities.

We know you are busy, but by making your courses accessible, you are creating a more inclusive and equitable learning environment for all of your students and abiding by the law required for all higher education courses (face-to-face and online).

Complete on or before May 17th.
