In Our Neighborhood... YaYa & Co.
Gather the welcome wagons, there’s a new neighbor moving into St. Clair Superior at 1030 E. 62nd St! It was love at first sight for Candy Mashmoor, founder of organic and ethically sourced textile company YaYa & Co, when she saw the vacant, historic building on E. 62nd St. The building once housed the American Gas Association Appliance Testing Laboratory and is truly a testament to the resilience of St. Clair Superior. The building miraculously survived the infamous explosion that killed 131 people on October 20th, 1944, after a natural gas leak from the East Ohio Gas Company’s tank farm on E. 61st. And Mashmoor doesn’t plan on messing with those good bones that have stood the test of time. Her $1.8 million renovation (with help from the City) will honor the original structure and features of the building including the original conveyor belt that runs between the first and second floors.
The renovated building will house YaYa & Co’s warehouse and showroom in the south building, local HVAC manufacturer Humongous Fan in the north building, and a coworking space and onsite daycare focused on supporting female entrepreneurs in the main building. Mashmoor plans on hiring minority and female contractors, creating jobs for Cleveland residents and low-income individuals, and offering paid internships for CMSD students. Mashmoor and her team at YaYa & Co are not only dedicated to sustainability and spreading colorful happiness through their products, but they are also community-minded and will be a welcome addition to St. Clair Superior. Welcome to the neighborhood!
