A Letter From Our Assistant Director

Happy Spring, almost Summer, St. Clair Superior!

There is so much to celebrate this Spring in the neighborhood. FIYAH is open and patio season is upon us! crobar also got their new patio installed, congrats on this new addition! KafeLA also has an updated patio, and Empress Taytu announced they’ll keep serving delicious Ethiopian food in the neighborhood! Ingenuity Cleveland’s Ignite Neighbor Nights have started and St. Clair Superior wants to thank all who joined us for our Ribbon Cutting Ceremony of the St. Clair Plaza last month. We look forward to seeing everyone all summer long on the third Thursday each month from 5-8pm for these community celebrations! Additionally, Cleveland Metroparks announced their Summer Concert Series and will present Overboard on 8/10 from 4-8 pm and will host Live Music Saturdays in July from 2 to 5 pm. All will be presented at the E 55th Street Marina. We are looking forward to the Grand Opening celebration for our newest business community member, Boss K9!

Stop the Bullying – Point them Out Community event will be held on Saturday, June 24, 11am-5pm at Carrie Cain Park on E 79th Street. This event is for the whole family.

I’m excited to share that we have started to gather artists in our community to learn from each other and to share resources and opportunities. If you are interested in joining this group, please email me!

We are excited to welcome Bella, Katie, and Jackson to our staff. Isabella Smith joins us for the Summer as a John Carroll University Intern; Katherine Garlock, an AmeriCorps VISTA Member, will be with us for a year, assisting with housing and outreach programs; and Jackson Perisutti, an AmeriCorps VISTA Summer Associate, will be with us for 9 weeks assisting with housing programs outreach, community garden outreach, and bringing Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) that accepts Produce Perks to St. Clair Superior.

I look forward to continuing to meet more residents and businesses as we continue to help St. Clair Superior thrive.

Sincerely,

Michelle Davis, Assistant Director for Stakeholder & Real Estate Development
In Our Neighborhood... Samantha Montanez

Samantha Montanez has lived in St. Clair Superior her entire life. Both of her parents grew up in the neighborhood, and Samantha grew up surrounded by her family on every block.

Growing up, Samantha’s father worked at EJ Kovacic Recreation Center, located in the heart of St. Clair Superior. Samantha has fond memories of playing at the rec center with other kids from the neighborhood. When SCSDC hosted a community meeting at Kovacic, Samantha saw the updates to the center for the first time and was so impressed to see all of the improvements. Growing up, Samantha spent her summers going to the rec center, enjoying neighborhood cookouts, going to the lake, and being close to family.

Samantha has some great recommendations for food in St. Clair Superior. "We are such foodies," said Samantha regarding her family. Samantha said that the best dim sum you can get is in our neighborhood at Bo Loong. She also enjoys going to Marie’s and Landmark. “These restaurants feel like family,” said Samantha, as she has been a patron of these local spots since she was very young.

Samantha and her family are very involved community members, and they do a great job of keeping up to date with upcoming projects and opportunities coming to our neighborhoods. Samantha is particularly excited about the Cleveland Metroparks CHEERS project coming to the east side lakefront. Samantha said that her "greatest hope and wish is to get our neighborhood more access to the lake and greenspace."

Samantha’s family owns a catering business called Panchita’s Catering, LLC. They focus on Puerto Rican and American food, and Polish desserts. What better way to get an authentic taste of St. Clair Superior than this! Be sure to check them out here.

Samantha is also involved with the Cleveland Lady’s Raider Fast Pitch Softball, which brings softball to the inner city. You can learn more about the organization here.
St. Clair Plaza is Open!

Thank you to all of those in the St. Clair Superior community who attended our ribbon cutting last month! So many of you gathered before another Ignite! Neighbor Night to celebrate with us. We had amazing vendors from the community show up to support us and the opening of our park, as well as so many residents and community members! We are excited to again provide this green community space to the St. Clair Superior neighborhood for all to enjoy.

St. Clair Superior Development Corp. (SCSDC) received a $50,000 grant award from the Jack, Joseph and Morton Mandel Foundation through our Executive Director's participation in the CDC Leadership Program (CDCLP). With this grant award, St. Clair Plaza was renovated to become an equitable and accessible public space. We hope you can visit the park and our neighborhood shipping container murals soon!

Don't forget: The SCSDC offices are located in the Slovenian National Home's space at 6413 St. Clair Ave., right down the street from our new park! Visit us soon!
